| Dear friends , this is the age of the Net ; with the net come the pros and cons of it though, as it gives you the opportunity to connect with the world ; it also allows the world to connect to you. With the latter, my friend comes the risk of being HACKED! Hacking is a growing concern in todays world. Thus in my following pages i will try to mention the ways how a popular communication software called ICQ. | As you probably know .. ICQ is a very popular messaging system used by over 100 million users over the world. Now ICQ is also very insecure.. that is some very nasty things can be done to it.. As users of this program we must be aware of the various ways a hacker might indeed penetrate our system. Firstly The person trying to steal your password will try to get your IP address . your IP address is the address of your computer with the help of which most computers will recognise the location of your computer on the net. next.. after getting your IP address.. the person has to look for the Port which ICQ is listening to for it's messages this is done by using several programs known as portscanners... (yup! I'll be having them as a sample for you to download pretty soon! but dont b naughty!) thirdly .. after getting the port AND your IP the hacker is nearly inhold of your computer... he can now use several 'ways' of hacking ... I will enumerate the various hacking terminology associated with ICQ hacking.. :-) 1. Bombing : using several programs called "mail bombers or message bombers" .. the hacker can now send you hundereds.. thousands [ and if he wants millions :-) ] of messages which have the effect of "clogging up"your computer. However this is harmless stuff. 2. Spoofing : this is another harmless form of hacking .. what is does is that one user "appears" like another user..this can be done to resemble people on ICQ without actually hacking thier passwords! Some hackers have a lovely time resmbling college hearthrobs in this way :-) . 3. Stealing : This is indeed serious hacking ... The person whoi knows all your open ICQ portsand has got a trogan into your computer can proceed into your computer..This can even be done with the help an ftp browser! . The person now hack into ur PC will see the files on your computer.. all of them and can retreive / erase / copy any of them.This is how passwords are stolen... Inside your ICQ's database directory you will find 3 files having the names 1.( your ICQ no).idx 2.( your ICQ no).msg and 3.( your ICQ no).dat These three files are essential for a person to know your password and also your message history . 4. Password cracking from .idx and .dat /--- there are several Password cracking programs available ( and will b on this page soon ) which are able to do this... 5. The last method of hacking passwords is the 'Bruteforce method"... well u simply enter the entire contents of the english dictionary ( try merriam webster LOL!!!! ) into a program.. tell it to register an user and then just pray that one of them actually hits!!!! There is another danger posed by remote administration tools like Netbus , Backorifice etc... When i get the time i will indeed discuss about the roles of these easy to use programs on hacking "any" computer connected to the net. PROTECTION MEASURES FOR ICQ USERS . 1. ALWAYS TURN ICQ WEBFRONT OFF! ( in the ICQ preferences menu) 2. DONOT ALLOW DIRECT CONNECTIONS WITH USERS ( - do-) 3. USE A PASSWORD WHICH IS A COMBINATION OF LETTERS AND NUMBERS 4.
