The evocative performance has been described as unadulterated power and spectacle blended with traditional Taiko drumming. TAO leader Yoshinori Suito founded the group in 1993 in the southern Kyushu region. They steadily built their strength and honed their skills until they were ready to play in front of international audiences. Mr Suito, one of four original members, said Tao drummers had to be as fit as a professional sports player. “To become a member of Tao in the first days you don’t need any musical talent, what you need is fitness,” Mr Suito said. The Mandurah show will feature 13 performers including Taro Harasaki who oak bay recreation centre joined the group in 2002 as a lead drummer. “I was looking for a full-time job at the time and happened to watch the TV commercial for the Tao coming to town,” Mr Harasaki said. “I was intending to lansdowne medical treatment centre see the show but before that I met Yoshiro (leader) while he was having dinner with his 10 (performers) and he recommended I hand in a CV.” Since then Mr Harasaki has been put through vigorous training to keep up with the other performers.
