The Amazonian city of Manaus is labelled the epicentre of child trafficking for prostitution. But after a bitter battle in Congress, the most high-profile political name on the inquiry's list, the vice-governor of Amazonas, Omar Aziz, was taken off at the last minute.

On April 20th., 1997, Galdino Jesus dos Santos, a Pataxo Ha-ha-hae Indian, was burned alive as he lay sleeping at a bus stop in Brasilia, federal capital of Brazil. Galdino was part of a group of Pataxós, a tribe which struggles to live in Southeastern Bahia. They were in Brasília to participate in a discussion over land rights problems. That night, Galdino got lost and ended up separated by the other Pataxós and sleeping alone in a bus stop. Five high middle class youth set fire on him. Galdino died a few hours later in a hospital by the burns he suffered all over his body. The killers said that they thought Galdino was a homeless person, as it was a reason to murder a human being.
Next week, four of the killers will be on trial in Brasília for murder. Because of the deffender's social position and the victm's background, there is a fear that the trial's outcome will reflect a clear social and economic protectionism. As a result, impunity, again, might prevail.
The disrespect to the civil rights of the poor and minorities in Brazil is a constant and has been reported by the United Nations and human rights organizations. If you want to show disapproval to such situation and help ending those injustices in Brazil, please, forward YOUR PROTEST to your friends AND please send it to the following addresses:

To the Brazilian Ministry of Justice, Brazilian Committee for Human Rights, United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights
Re: Galdino Jesus dos Santos' Case
We, the undersigned are concerned about the outcome
of Galdino de Jesus dos Santos' trial. We understand that the four accused
had confessed that they set fire in Galdino's body on 04.20.97 while the
victim was sleeping in a bus stop. The crime was brutal and indeed cruel.
As all the accused belong to the Brazilian high middle class, and that
one of them is the son of a federal judge, and another, of a former higher
court justice, we fear they will not be punished for their horrendous crime
due to social and economic protectionism.
Therefore, we urge that you employ your efforts to guarantee that the
killers of Galdino be punished, therefore, the disrespect to civil rights
in Brazil will not be encouraged by impunity.
Who wants to stop the Brazilian congress from mutilating the earth ?!
Please read what follows and send it to everyone you know:
The Brazilian congress
is now voting on a project
that will reduce
the Amazon forest to 50% of its size. .
The area to be deforested
is 4 times the size of
Portugal and would
be mainly used for agriculture and
pastures for livestock...
All the wood is to be sold
to international
markets in the form of wood chips, by
multinational companies...
The truth is that the soil
in the amazon forest
is useless without the forest
itself. Its quality
is very acidic and the region is
prone to constant
floods. At this time more than
160.000 square kilometers
deforested with the same
purpose, are abandoned
and in the process of becoming
deserts. "Desertification"
threatens to end life as we know it.
We cannot let this
happen.
{Please copy this

complete name in
the list below, and
send to everyone
you know. (Don't just forward it as
it will end up with
rows of 's. )
Don't forget to add these addresses in Brazil everytime you send this message so they learn that we are protesting to save our Nature.

Subject: A AMAZONIA NÃO É
O TEXAS
A AMAZÔNIA NÃO É O TEXAS #$@ AMAZON IS NOT TEXAS
Referência: nosso documento "FIZEMOS ONTEM; FAREMOS SEMPRE!" de 30.01.01.
News from the Amazon Region delate that some "gringos", particularly from the USA, including ONGs - sorry, I don't know what it means -, are purchasing land in the region, paying lots of money to those Brazilian corrupted government authorities and misleading with lies the poor local landowners that are suffering from the heavy taxes and other abuse the government apply.
History tells US that last century North Americans disguised as "farmers" and moved to live in the so-called TEXAS, a part of the Mexican territory. After a while those invaders provoked a war with the local residents and the American soldiers participated disguised as peasants.
As a result of such "game" Americans take up the Texas territory declaring it independent, and of course the American "White House" later recognized this illegal action as legal. Some time later the "new Texans" residents asked to incorporate their new state to the USA. Everything was well planned and slyly performed.
Next, the "new americans" take up the whole Mexican territory from the New Mexico (NOVO MÉXICO) to California and from the South Frontier to Colorado. Also, they invaded using force and $$ power two thirds of the Old Mexico which until now can't be taken serious as a sovereign nation since its under pressure from the USA.
Now the US want to play the same game with BRASIL, taking up (buying!) the Amazon Region. Are we Brazilian let it happen? NO, we never sell out our land! We will fight to death as we did fighting during GUARARAPES rebelion. Yet, we must prepare ourselves and organise our people to fight to keep what belong to BR. The USA already are buying (invading) the ALCÂNTARA/MA - Alcantara city in Maranhao state - and installing themselves in this part of Brazil with lies. Brazilian citizens, let's fight such insult! However we need to have alongside our - FORÇAS ARMADAS bem armadas - the naational army well armed, educated and morally fit, reflecting our glorious past when we fought against oppression and were victorious. We need to have the unconditional support of our citizens to win this battle.
BE AWARE USA and the foes of the Brazilian Nation, WE ARE ALIVE!
We are the GRUPO GUARARAPES from Fortaleza, Ceara State.

So what are the names
of the investor groups....etc. can't tell my protest happy friends
and
students with out
accurate names etc. and leagal proof... copies of land deeds...etc...DBA's
etc.
------
Also the Texas history
sounds accurate...however the SW referencs are near enough to the
truth to be twisted
poorly... the ad hoc reasoning between the two regional el norte'n histories
is not accurate.
Read up on President
Polk's response to requests for humanitarian aid for the region in the
1840's... then in
the 1930' & 50's white racist repatiration projects(that had nothing
to do with
Polk or the Know
Nothing Party movement....then your arguments will have power and truthful
accuracy...to which
readers won't have excuses to dismiss them so easily. Also do research
on
who lived in the
"great american desert". aka the regions of Michigan territory to
the West
Coast. And
who and what came to be known as the Washington Red Skins and who they
truely were
dispite ad hoc white and pop culture reasoning.
thnx
Enclosed is the letter I have sent ot BRACCA (Brazilian Community Council of Australia), the letter that I had already sent off to the local Media here in Australia and also bellow the request made by Black Paul during his show in Darling Harbour for the BR 500's.
VKDS Productions
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Only that Contemporary Brazilian Artist BLACK PAUL chose to ignore the the so called demand/order last Sunday to stop performing, the public at Darling Harbour were able to share in a minute of silence in remembrance of the sufferings of the indigenous Brazilians and also to protest against the discrimination and oppression of the African descendant Brazilians. The majority of the large crowd, mainly Brazilians seemed relieved and pleased to be given this honour of one minute of silence, respect, rather than enduring the false parallels being sprouted by MC, they supposedly exist between Brazilian and Australian society.
Maybe a truthful parallel at the moment is that the indigenous Brazilians have the support of the public in Brazil and abroad.
Also there there will always be those that continue to try to stop freedom of speech.
The so call demand/order came from Elias Badaro the president of BRACCA (Brazilian Community Council of Australia Inc.) last Sunday, 16th April at the celebrations of 500 years of Brazil. Such discrimination has no place here in Australia even though the idea apparently dies hard.
