Here is a photo of the sounds near Picton. This is near where we got off the ferry when we first arrived in the South Island. |

Probably my favourite place in New Zealand was the small town of Kaikoura a few hours north of Christchurch. Beautiful mountians meeting the sea; very dramatic. REminds me of a very small version of my "adopted hometown" of Ventura California. Click on photo for more info... |

At Te Mahia we got to go swimming in the sound and used the rowboats available there. Click on photo for link to Te Mahia Bay Resort web site |

We spent our last night on the South Island in this beautiful cove in Te Mahia on the sounds. The sounds of the native birds were incredible at the time this photo was taken. |

Slope Point- the southernmost point of the South Island; nothing but ocean between us and Antarctica. Yes, it was VERY windy when this was taken. |

At the south end of the South Island is The Catlins, a sparsely populated windswept area. |

Another picture at Rakaia Gorge. This is a stand of lupin as tall as me. |

We were driving the "Inland Scenic Route" bypassing Christchurch when we came across this gorge (Rakaia Gorge). The water is a deep hue of blue due to the glacial melt from the mountains. |
