Camping in the Desert
When we lived on the coast, we used to go out to the desert to camp out at least twice a month.  Now that we live out here we rarely get to go.  Partly this is because there is always lots to do around the house/yard but also because home is almost like camping out.  We have the bright stars, a camp fire pit and a picnic table so it's like being out in the wilderness but with better toilets.
This is in Death Valley National Park.  The hills, devoid of major vegitation, are filled with colourful rocks and minerals.
This is near an area called Jackass Flats.  Very isolated and accessible only by 4WD vehicle on the old dirt mining roads.
Here is the road through Jackass Flats...it is pretty smooth in this section
One of my favourite places to go camping is Striped Butte in Death Valley National Park.  Very isolated, it is near where the old Manson family hideout was.  OK, that's creepy but it still is a place of great rugged beauty and solitude.
This is called Bat Rock Road, apparently because there was a bat-shaped rock nearby at one time.  This is near the Saline Valley.
Another great camping area is Saline Valley in the Inyo Mountains.  This was a great moonrise over the valley the last time we went camping there.
Another site where many westerns were filmed is the Alabama Hills near the Sierra Nevadas.
Another prize winning photo (yes, third prize again at the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival!).  This is the Trona Pinnacles; they have been used in many films and TV shows including Lost in Space, Planet of the Apes (new version) and are currently featured in a headcold medication commercial
