EXPLORATORY FCS

Grade Level: 7th
Length: One Semester
This course is designed to introduce junior high students to the basic skills of FCS. Students' needs have become increasingly diverse and demanding. To succeed on their own, students will need a strong foundation of personal and management skill.

COMPREHENSIVE FCS
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One Year
Credits: 10
This class is organized to give students and in-depth look at the family and the functions it performs. It is designed to help students develop skills necessary for a well-rounded life both now and in the future.
 

FOOD SCIENCE
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One Year
Credits: 10 (FCS or Science)
Food Science is a course that studies foods and nutrition from chemical, biological, and FCS methods. Experiments are conducted that develop laboratory, writing, problem-solving, and reasoning skills.
 

LIFE SKILLS
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 11-12
Length: One/Two semesters
Credits: 5/10
Life Skills includes those topics and skills necessary to live successfully. It focuses on values, goals, and decision-making skills related to living. Consumer topics are included as are some work-related and people skills. Areas covered: foods and nutrition, clothing, housing, consumer education, relationships, marriage, parenting, and the family.
 

SPORTS NUTRITION
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
This course studies the nutritional needs of athletes and the general public related to physical fitness. Areas of study: dietary habits, nutritional needs according to age and activity levels, dieting and diets, media and nutrition information reporting, body composition and energy balance, governmental dietary guidelines, nutrition labeling, shopping techniques, and meal planning.
 

WORLD OF WORK
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 11-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
This course is designed to give students skills needed to make a smooth transition from the school classroom to meaningful job experience. It then will cover information necessary to move from part-time to full-time work. The skills necessary to successful employment will be covered and they include: effective communication, math, computers, time management, and leadership skills.
 

HOUSING & INTERIOR DESIGN
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
This course is designed to prepare you to make wise housing choices related to both renting and buying. It also covers information related to the different types of housing available for both renting and buying. Housing styles are identified and decorating techniques are covered. Purchasing furnishings and sources of furnishings are investigated.
 

CLOTHING & FASHION DESIGN
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
This course explores fashion and fashion merchandising both from a historical and current trend perspective. Dressing for different occasions, cultures, and personality types, evaluating what we have and our needs, purchasing, and marketing. Clothing care and construction will also be covered.
 

PARENTING & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Prerequisite: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
The focus of this course is on the decisions related to parenthood. It covers decisions such as when to have children and health practices to follow both before and after having children. This course helps students to recognize children's stages of development and to realize how parents' roles change as their children grow. It also promotes interactions that are enjoyable, supportive, encouraging, and rewarding for both parents and children.
 

CONSUMER EDUCATION
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
The major purpose of this course is to help students become informed consumers. The following concepts and skills will be taught: how the economy functions, making wise purchases, managing money, evaluating sales and advertising practices, and how to guard against fraudulent or deceptive sales practices.
 

FOODS & NUTRITION
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One semester
Credits: 5
Foods and Nutrition covers all aspects of food preparation skills and nutritional needs of all ages. Specific areas of study are: food choices, nutrient needs, guidelines for good nutrition, planning daily food choices, food and fitness, special topics in nutrition, workspace design, tools and techniques, consumer decisions, foods for meals and snacks, foods of the world, special techniques, and careers in food and nutrition.
 

FAMILY HEALTH
Prerequisites: None
Grade Level: 9-12
Length: One Semester
Credits: 5
Family Health is designed to help students understand the importance of making healthy choices for themselves and their families. The study of social health, human development and the aging process, nutrition and fitness, preventing disease through environmental and community health, substance abuse, health care, and safety and first aid are all covered in the semester course.
