“for ye have not passed this way heretofore”

Joshua 4:3

Gilgal:

is the ancient place where Joshua and the children of Israel crossed the Jordan riverbed and entered into the Promised Land, Canaan.  The name means to roll away reproach of the past and to begin anew.  Theologically, it is important to us because it became synonymous with repentace, remembrance, and thanksgiving.  The place was marked by Joshua with 12 stones, taken from the midst of the dry river bed of Jordan and assembled into an altar for remembrance.  The altar was to continually remind successive generations of God’s children of His glory and providence:

Joshua 4: 21-24:

Then Joshua spake unto the children of Israel, saying, “When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?; Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land, for the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over; that all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.”
