Where are the major centres of flamenco?
Flamenco is very much alive in the South of Spain, especially Jerez de la
Frontera, Sevilla, Granada and Málaga. These are the places the majority
of flamenco's greatest performers have always come from, and still do.
Among these, Jerez de la Frontera is unbeatable as the most flamenco city
in Spain. It has more places where flamenco is performed than any other city
and produces an endless stream of great performers. If you go out late at
night, you will probably see and hear groups of people standing in a circle
and clapping, singing and dancing bulerías
(which was invented in Jerez). That is why this city has such a special feel,
because the purest flamenco may happen anytime, anywhere. That is why it's
the best place to visit if you want to learn
flamenco guitar.
"This famous wine town, just a sea breeze from the Atlantic, has
been, is today, and no doubt will continue to be the world's most fertile
breeding ground of flamenco. Jerez never ceases to astound as one observes
a never-ending parade of excellent and often creative flamencos blossom there
with the regularity and profligacy of vine shoots in a vintage year."
- Donn Pohren in his book Lives and Legends of Flamenco
