For one Logan apartment, the beautiful fall foliage became more than eye candy – it became a nuisance. When Utah State University Student Brian Haddock woke up Saturday morning, he found his basement stairwell full of leaves.
In fact, the stairwell was truly full – six feet deep with leaves. Haddock and his roommate, Jeff Burton, had stayed up late Friday night watching the movie “Cast Away.” Around 5:30 a.m. they fell asleep on the couches in their front room. Haddock was awoken around 7 a.m.
“I heard a swoosh sound,” said Haddock. “At first I thought it was the waves in the movie.”
The sound was really garbage bags full of leaves being emptied out. Haddock opened the door to investigate the curious sound and was buried in leaves. He said he could not get out of his apartment fast enough to chase the perpetrators.
What was probably intended as a prank, turned into a problem. The tenants could not use their door. Haddock said they didn’t have time to clean it up right away, so they climbed out the window.
Thanks to an hour gained by the daylight savings switch, Haddock and Burton were able to clean up the mess before Monday’s rain. So far, no one has claimed the prank, but neighbor Kourtney Kemp said, “I wish I had thought of it.”
“I’m very unhappy,” said Burton. “It was a waste of my time – a pain in the arse.”
The leaves are gone. The steps are clean. The tenants of this Darwin Avenue apartment can sit back and laugh about the prank, but they only hope that the winter season will not lead to a snowy repeat.
