Jeremy has a wide range of interests. He doesn’t pursue any of them with anything approaching obsession. He started learning the tin whistle two years ago, and learned around fifty tunes by ear through the Methail Cheol Irish music association. He has since moved on to learning the trumpet, which he is enjoying very much. He and his son Lexei learn together. They took Grade 2 last year and will take Grade 3 this year. Since he started learning, he finds that he appreciates more kinds of music than he used to. For example, he used to detest trad jazz, but now quite enjoys it.He especially likes the sound of East European and Balkan music played on the trumpet – he has the Fanfare Ciocarlia CD ‘Radio Pascani’ and the Kocani Orkestar CD L’orient est rouge. Other musical favourites include Transglobal Underground, and the compilation album ‘We Got Latin Soul’.To his own surprise he has started to run. He now runs 4-5 miles two to three times a week, and is even beginning to enjoy it. He keeps three ducks (an Aylesbury, an Indian Runner and a Khaki Cambell) in the back garden; they lay eggs and keep the garden slug-free.He and the family enjoy camping, but mainly of the ‘going to music festivals’ kind – not the ‘off the beaten track’ kind. They have been regulars at the Womad festival for the last five years. They have a brilliant Californian geodesic dome tent, of which he is very proud. Favourite authors include Charles Pallister (especially The Quincunx), Simon Louvish, and William Gibson. In 2002 he left the Labour Party and joined the Green Party. He helps to organise the Red Herring Club, a organisation for the children of secular Jews. |
