| I spilled the whole pot of soup and made a big mess. Or ... |

| I grasped the huge black cast iron pot with my old ragged potholders. UGH! I groaned. This pot weighs a ton! I plodded on with heavy steps, every muscle straining with the weight of the pot. Uhhhh! I said, sweat forming along my brow, feeling very warm from the steam floating up from the hot soup. Suddenly my toe got snagged on something. I looked down. My poor little toe was stuck in the fringe that was unraveling along the edge of the old rag rug in the middle of the floor. I tipped to the left. Woooh! I yelled as the soup sloshed toward the edges of the pot. GLOOP! GLOOP! GLOOP! The soup spilled over the edge of the pot as I tipped to the right. Thick, greasy soup slopped down the sides of the pot. HOT! HOT! I yelled as the soup dripped over my fingers. Then the worst thing of all happened. I felt the pot begin to slip, to slide in my hands. Oh no! I shouted as I gripped the pot handles tightly. But it was no use. The pot went flying out of my hands. BOOM! It hit the floor. I watched, horrified as the soup splashed across the kitchen, an ocean of broth and vegetables covering the shiny white tiled floor. Tomatoes splattered against the cabinets. Carrots slid under the table. Potatoes rolled around like golf balls. My feet slid on the greasy mess and flew out from under me. My eyes popped open and my heart pounded. In a second, I found myself sliding through the whole mess on my backside. What a disaster! I yelled. I sat there on the floor for a minute, my head in my hands. Id better get rid of that rotten old rug, I thought to myself. After all, it was the cause of the whole problem. Thats what gave me the idea. I grabbed the rug, sat myself down on it and pushed myself along the floor, mopping up the tomatoes, carrots, broth and potatoes. I scooped them up and threw them all away. Finally, I turned the rug over and wiped up the rest of the grease. Then I threw away the rug as well! I looked around. The kitchen was almost as good as new. I made a decision then and there. The next time I wanted to have a nice hot bowl of soup, Id go to a restaurant and order one! |
