Mr. Aten's Newsletter - September, 2005
Im very pleased with the start of the school year. The students are learning my expectations of them while working hard to complete each assignment. I know they will continue to do their best work.
Mathematics
We will be finishing Chapter 1 this week. The students will be given a pretest Tuesday or Wednesday. The next day we will go over this in class, and they will be able to use the pretest as a study guide for the chapter test the following day. Please be looking for this, as you might be able to help your child prepare for their first chapter test.
Spelling and Vocabulary
We will continue to study our spelling words and vocabulary definitions each week. If I can help you or your child in any way prepare for these tests, please let me know.
Small Groups
for Reading Novels

We have now started reading novels in small groups. Three groups out of five are meeting with me each day to read and discuss the chapters. Please encourage your child to keep up with each assignment so they will be able to participate fully in our discussions and activities.

Every 7 school days or so, a new small group will take a break from reading a novel so they can listen to a book on tape. Through our listening centers, students are motivated to listen to books that are on a higher reading level.

A Week on The Mountain for Mr. Aten
NCCAT Sept. 26 Sept. 30

I have been accepted to attend The Mountain seminar at NCCAT, the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, in western NC the week of September 26 30. I am very excited about this opportunity as it was cancelled last year due to the extreme flooding from several hurricanes.

The mountain environment will serve as our focus as we study the mountain as a symbol and as a physical reality while gaining hands-on experiences in natural history. We will be hiking several days observing hawk migration and the flora and fauna along the way as we spend one overnight stay at the Mt. LeConte Lodge, one of the highest peaks of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Needless to say, I will not be able to update my webpage daily while attending this seminar. However, each assignment will be posted on the board like always, so the students should be able to keep up with all their assignments.
