Mr. Aten's Newsletter - October, 2005
September has already passed and Fall is here, hopefully cooling things a little. I had a wonderful time last week at NCCAT. I learned several new things about the animals and plants in the mountains during the Fall season. Hiking was incredible; even the five-mile hike off the mountain in the rain was something Ill never forget.
Math
We will be finishing up chapter two this week and taking our chapter test. Chapter three will consist of multiplication and division facts. The students are working hard completing each assignment, and I applaud their efforts as the work will continue to get more difficult. However, I believe learning and memorizing their multiplication facts is the key to success in 4th grade math.
Mr. Atens
Multiplication Bunch

This week we will start taking a timed multiplication test on the factors 2 - 12. Students will be given five minutes to correctly answer fifty problems. They will need a 100% before moving on to the next level. Most days, they will receive their results back that same day so they will know what level to study for the next days test. Please help your child study as we reinforce memorization of multiplication facts.
Writing
We will begin learning about narrative writing. I am very sorry to ask this of you, but I would like each student to bring in a one-inch, three-ring binder to serve as a writing portfolio by Monday, October 10.  If this is a problem, please let me know. You may also want to buy a packet of lined paper to keep in the portfolio. This portfolio will allow students to keep up with their writings and handouts. For the most part, this writing portfolio will be kept at school. Just a reminder, you may want to check out my narrative writing guide that is on my webpage. This will help you learn what your child will be learning in class.
NO MORE Yughio Cards
I am completely banning Yughio cards from my classroom. Ive tried to make allowances early on, and for the last several weeks I have asked every student to keep them home, but we are still having a problem with these cards. Therefore in the best interest of uninterrupted academic learning to continue, these cards must be banned from my classroom. Please help me enforce this new policy.
Going to the Cafeteria
Starting on Monday, October 10, the students will no longer be able to go to the cafeteria during morning break to purchase snacks. The cafeteria staff is short-handed this year, and this 30 minute time slot is making food preparation more difficult. Students will be allowed to purchase their snacks as they arrive to school in the morning.
Pen Pals
This year our class has a unique opportunity to be Pen Pals with another fourth grade class from Wittenburg. It just so happens that I am close with a certain fourth grade teacher, and we have discussed the possibilities of our students writing to each other throughout the year. Mrs. Aten and I think the students will learn writing skills along with social skills as they create friendships that might continue throughout the years.
