I hope all the snow and bad weather is finally behind us. It has been difficult to keep a routine going when you never knew if you were going to have all five days of the week here at school. Having the 4th grade writing test to prepare for was also a challenge. Im very pleased with how hard every student worked preparing for this test. It always amazes me to see every student step up and put their heart and soul into these state tests. You can be proud of your child because I am most definitely proud of them. Now, we need to turn our attention to the EOG tests coming up in May. In a few weeks, a letter will be sent home asking students to stay after school for EOG tutoring that I will be doing.

National Board Certification Last year, I completed the National Board Certification hoping to improve my ability as a teacher. Without a doubt, it was the greatest challenge professionally. It sharpened my skills and awareness for student learning. Although the process was rewarding, I came up a little short. Ive decided to redo a couple entries this year hoping to achieve this great honor. In the process of completing the entries, I need to show evidence of learning through samples of student work that was done in class. I will delete the last name of any child whose work I use. I also have to videotape a short lesson. The focus will be on my lesson and the interaction the students have with each other and me. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this and the permission slip Im sending home. I need everyone to return the permission slip. Thank you for your support.

Reading Counts Once again, I am disappointed to announce that last month we only had 82% of the students obtain 100 points for their monthly goal. I gave the class an extra week to reach this goal and Im glad several students just made it. Your child needs to have 115 points by March 31. A special congratulations to the following students for their accomplishments this past month. Over-the-Top Kyle B Stacy Jesica Please look for your childs RC Report Card that will show their progress from Jan. 1 through this past week. I circled the number of points they have for the year. While your looking it over, please ask the following questions: - Is my child keeping up with the monthly goals? Have they stopped reading since Christmas? Are they passing their tests? Are they not passing? Are they retaking them trying to pass it the next day after reading it? Will they reach their Over-the-Top goal for the year? 120 points for 3rd grade 140 points for 4th grade. If my child went on the Concord Mills Reward Trip for 4th/5th grade students, will they make 180 points by April 30 to go on the second reward trip? I hope these questions help you as you analyze your childs progress. Im very pleased with the effort several of my students are putting forth and I hope you take this time to brag on your child and to let them know that you are proud of them too.

Math Facts in a Flash A well-deserved congratulation goes to Kayle for mastering all 44 levels in less than two minutes. Now she will try to increase her speed of fluency by passing every level in less than 1 minute, 20 seconds. I know she is ready for this challenge. Some students will also be receiving a letter about their performance over the last two weeks in Math Facts in a Flash. Please continue to encourage and help your child study for their tests. You could call them out or create flash cards as a way of studying with your child.
