The Honored Dead

Hallowed by the memory of the honored dead

Who have nobly shed their blood to crush rebellio

against the Government. Let their names be held i

grateful remembrance, and their bereaved familie

comfortably provided for. The ode of Collins is familiar to mos

readers, but it is so beautiful and appropriate that it will bear re-perusal

How sleep the brave who sink to rest

By all their country's wishes blest

When Spring, with dewy finger cold

Returns to deck their hallowed mould

She there shall dress a sweeter so

Than Fancy's feet have ever trod

By fairy hands their knell is rung

By forms unseen their dirge is sung

There Honor comes, a pilgrim gray

To bless the turf that wraps their clay

And Freedom shall a while repai

To dwell a weeping hermit there
