Chapter 5
I sat around Fisherman's Wharf for several hours after finishing the meal Sherry had procured for me. I knew she was in trouble, but I was too weak to do anything about it. I was also amazed at how Sherry was able to keep going. I was starving, tired, and running on adrenaline, while she seemed to be operating at normal and as impulsive as ever. Still, I knew something was wrong, as she wouldn't just leave me in the situation we were in.
-Terry Stonewall
March 13th, 2000
Terry sat in the sun shining down on an atypical sunny day in San Francisco. Her eyes wandered through the crowds of individuals swarming through the Fisherman's Wharf area. It had been several hours since Sherry ran off, & she still hasn't returned. Just like her to get into trouble & have to run off like that. And there was nothing she could've done, as she was too weak to cloud the cop's minds. So, she waited for Sherry to return. After all, with her abilities, the police should not be able to stop her. But, what if their pursuers showed up.
But Terry pushed that thought out of her head. It seemed that their pursuers were interested in keeping a low profile. It was she & Terry that drew attention to them, which is what they were probably trying to prevent. Coming out in a large enough force to capture Sherry would certainly draw unwanted attention to their operation. And, with her change of clothes, Terry blended in with the crowd of tourist that now passed by her.
She concentrated on the crowd again, trying to pick up Sherry amongst them. Instead, there was a multitude of thoughts out there. She hadn't been among this many people since her abilities asserted themselves. It was a bit overwhelming, & she had a hard time picking individual thoughts out of the crowd. Since she had nothing better to do than wait, she reached out for a mind to grab the surface thoughts.
I'm going to kill Harold for not getting the Alcatraz tickets earlier…
Oh, look at that silver man…
Oh god, that homeless man is going to ask me for money…
The least these damn tourists could do is toss me a buck or two for getting up this early to perform for them…
If I don't hurry, I'll miss the boat & be late for work…
Still no sign of the either Stonewall…
Terry snapped out of her probe as she looked around in the crowd. They were here & they were looking for her. She looked over to where a man painted in silver was standing absolutely still, with a crowd of onlookers surrounding him. On the outskirts of that crowd, she saw a black haired man, with a black suit and dark sunglasses. He seemed to be searching the crowd intently.
In her head, she felt a gentle probe pass over her, as her mental walls were touched. They knew she was here, even if the can't directly probe her. They were scanning for her through in the crowd. If she stayed here, she would be caught.
Terry casually got up from her spot, wiping herself off, making her movements seem natural, as if she was just another tourist visiting San Francisco for the first time. She looked around, trying to decide which way to head. They were probably looking for Sherry up the way she had ran, & there was a chance she could be mistaken for Sherry if she headed up by the McDonalds. So, she turned west, and headed for Ghiradelli Square.
The two Covert Ops agents dragged Sherry into the maximum Security wing, her hands bonded by some sort of hi-tech cuffs. She was still unconscious from the mind blast she had received, & it was unlikely she was going to revive anytime soon. As they approached the first checkpoint, a figure stepped out from one of the side corridors and in a cold, mechanical voice spoke, "Stop".
The two agents stopped right where they were, not moving a muscle & not making a sound except the sound of their breathing. The figure, an Asian man, who looked to be in his late twenties, unusually tall & muscular for an Asian, as his physique was evident even under the expensive Armani suit he wore. His face seemed to be chiseled to perfection, with perfectly groomed black hair. He exuded power & he knew it.
"You know who I am," he spoke into a device he carried that modulated his voice into a disheartening mechanical tone.
"Yes, sir," both men stated in unison.
"You know who I represent."
"Yes, sir."
The Asian smiled at this response as he continued.
"Have you notified anyone of her capture yet?"
"No, sir. We were going to get her secured first, then notify Adreneline, as is standing orders on this case."
The Asian man nodded as he crossed over to Sherry to examine her. Her body was limp, but he could see how firm her muscles were, how she had excellent physical prowess when she was awake & alert. But, he had also read her file. He knew everything that was known about her, & how she was a bit impulsive & reckless. That was something that she would need to work on. He would see that she was given the proper guidance in that respect. Already, a plan was forming.
"Take her instead to Science Lab #1, & do not inform Adreneline or anyone else of her capture."
"Yes, sir," they both said in perfect unison.
"Good, & we never had this conversation & you never really captured her, so you better get back out there after she is delivered to the Science Lab & continue the search as you would have before. Understood."
"Yes, sir," they said in unison & took off down the corridor the Asian man had stepped out of, dragging Sherry behind them.
There were definitely some possibilities in her, from what he had read. But she needed some developing, some training, and some grooming. It will be a long process, but he can wait. He had plenty of time, & he suspected that she did as well.
He flipped out a comm unit out of his pocket & dialed in a code.
"Dr. Westmore, here," a voice spoke through the unit.
"Doctor, this is Te. I have a job for you in Science Lab #1. Meet me there immediately."
The voice got nervous, as it responded, "I'll be right there, right away, sir."
"Good. Te out."
The man, who identified himself as Te, turned to walk down the hall Sherry was dragged down just a few moments ago. As he walked, he punched another code into his comm.
"Have my car ready in 15 minutes. "
Detective Jason Stormaton stormed into the Police Laboratory, carrying the jumpsuit he retrieved from the Macys blast. He looked around and saw a blond man, with glasses & wearing a white lab coat sitting at a table looking through a microscope. Stormaton made a beeline towards the man, as he spoke, "Lewis."
The man in the lab coat looked up, saw Stormaton, & let out a low groan.
"Detective, how many times have I told you about the proper way of handling evidence?"
Stormaton handed him the jumpsuit as he responded, "This is not evidence, this is personal."
Lewis sighed as he took the jumpsuit from Stormaton, "And I have also told you that this is not your personal laboratory, & that we have serious police work to do here."
Stormaton pulled out a cigarette.
"I just need to know what material that is."
Lewis took out some scissors & started cutting a piece of the fabric, though he seemed to struggle to make the first cut. Stormaton looked on as he took a puff of his cigarette. Lewis looked up at him in bewilderment.
"This is a non-smoking building."
Stormaton just glanced down at him & then took another drag of his cigarette. Lewis sighed & finished cutting a piece of the fabric out, though with much difficulty.
"Tough stuff," Lewis spoke as he put the fabric sample under the microscope. He looked through the microscope for five minutes without saying a word, though he had a puzzled expression on his face. Finally, Stormaton finished his cigarette & put it out, before clearing his throat. Lewis' head snapped up as he realized that Stormaton was still there waiting.
"This is something I've never seen before, & I'm quite fascinated by it. It looks very resilient, yet lightweight & flexible. I need to run more tests on it. If I can figure out how it's made, I think it can be improved upon to make lightweight body armor…"
Stormaton took the jumpsuit from the lab table. Lewis started to protest, but Stormaton stuck out his hand.
"The sample under the microscope, please."
The bewildered scientist started to plead, "But, Detective, you don't seem to understand…"
"I understand all to well, and this is for your own protection," Stormaton interrupted. "You will forget you ever saw this and never speak of this again. Believe me, if you do speak of it, it will be the last thing you speak of."
Stormaton took the slide with the piece of fabric in it & made his way to the door. The scientist sat their stunned. As Stormaton opened the door, Lewis was able to mutter, "I can't believe you threatened me."
Stormaton looked at him with his stern eyes & spoke, "It's not me who will threaten you if you ever speak of it."
And Stormaton stepped out the door, leaving a very confused scientist alone in his lab.
"And we still have had no luck in finding either sister. It is entirely possible that they are no longer in the Fisherman's Wharf area. There are so many people in the area; it is difficult to search without drawing attention to ourselves. We thought we detected one of them at one point, but we were unable to pin her down. We believe it was the telepathic one. She's a strong one who doesn't have the usual visual indicators for one of her strength."
Lancaster paced his office; his fist clenched tight, his movements barely restrained from exploding into a tidal wave of destruction & anger.
"I don't want excuses, I want results. Find them & bring them to me. Understood."
"Yes, sir. Miller out," as the comm channel clicked off.
Lancaster was on the edge of exploding, as those girls were being extremely difficult to capture. The teams should've captured them a long time ago. They should've been caught at Macys. He read the report on that, & was still trying to figure out how they escaped from there. Too much attention was drawn as it was from the need to blow the place up to cover up the destruction their blasters had already caused to the place. That was reckless & foolhardy.
"Computer, who was the officer in charge of the Macys operation?"
"Major Jarred Jacoby, but command was assumed by Lieutenant Dornado when the Major was injured," a pleasant women's voice responded.
Jacoby. He was one of the best agents they had; though Lancaster personally didn't think highly of him. True, he was skilled, but he was only human with cybernetic implants to make up for the loss of his eyesight. How a normal had reached the rank of Major, he couldn't understand. He was privy to some sensitive secrets, & the safeguards on humans were not nearly as good as the safeguards on Paranormals. As well he knew.
"Damn…" he muttered, remembering the blocks that were on him. The blocks that he resented so greatly. If only he could overcome them. There have been a few cases where they didn't take, but he wasn't one of them, as he well knew. Someday, though.
"Sifu online demanding contact," the computer chimed at him.
Lancaster grumbled, resenting the cheerfulness of the computer, though he usually found her voice quite refreshing. But not today. He clicked a button on his desk as he heard the comm channel click on.
"Lancaster here."
"Adreneline, I notice you are still in San Francisco. I though you had a meeting in New York at the United Nations today?"
Lancaster cursed at Sifu in his head. He had assigned one of his operatives to attend that meeting in his place, so he could oversee the situation here in San Francisco. He had expected to make that meeting, but the inefficiency of capturing the sisters forced him to send another in his place.
"I assigned someone else to that meeting. I'm still dealing with issues here in San Francisco."
There was a brief pause before the voice spoke again over the comm.
"What sort of issues?"
Lancaster was already on edge before this call, but having to defend himself to Sifu like this was bringing about his other frustrations he had. But, he had to remain calm; or else he had no chance of ever succeeding.
"I'm overseeing the recapture of two rogues who escaped."
"Really, Scott. We have Military Operations & Covert Operations to handle that. You have other issues to be dealing with."
Lancaster sighed before continuing.
"With all due respect, I believe their escape was an inside job."
There was another pause over the comm. Lancaster can just see Sifu sitting behind his desk in New York, with his fingers stapled before him, calmly contemplating everything before speaking. His pauses infuriated Lancaster, which was why Sifu had longer pauses with Lancaster, just to keep him in his place. Of course, Lancaster couldn't prove this, which infuriated him even more.
"You know the Paranormals couldn't do it."
"Yes, sir. I have a suspect who I want to interrogate."
"Oh, really. Who?"
Did Lancaster detect surprise in his voice? He had never heard of Sifu being surprised by anything. This may be an opportunity.
"Yes, sir. I believe Major Jarred Jacoby; a.k.a. Silent Death may be responsible. He is Head of Security here in San Francisco, and he was personally in charge of the operation to recover them that let them get away & resulted in us having to blow up Macys in Union Square."
"I saw something about that on the morning news. We were responsible for that?"
Oops, Lancaster thought. He just gave away a piece of information to Sifu that he was unaware of. Damn! Need to get focused & back onto the topic of Jacoby.
"Yes, sir. Now, about Major Jacoby."
Silence filled the comm line again, as Lancaster knew that Sifu had something on his mind. Of course Sifu was aware that Lancaster didn't care for Jacoby, and was against recruiting him, much less promoting him to a prominent position in Military Ops. But, that was a decision that was outside his sphere of influence. But, investigating him as a suspect was totally within his sphere of influence.
"You may question Major Jacoby, though I doubt you will get anything out of him. He is quite strong willed."
"Thank You, Sir."
"I'm enroute to my retreat & will not be in communication for several days. Get that San Francisco situation under control. Sifu out."
Lancaster breathed a sigh of relief. So, Sifu was going to be out of touch for a few days. Good. It gives him a chance to get this situation wrapped up & in a way that makes him look good. After all, appearances are everything. Meanwhile, he had another loose end to teach a lesson to.
"Computer, bring up the file on Kyle Jaxxon. I think I might want to hire him."
Te Dee clicked off his comm channel in the back of his limousine. His talk with Adreneline went well, though he sensed that Adreneline was on edge. Good, he can't think as clearly if he is on edge. He would truly be dangerous if he could remain calm & focused but that is something he can only fake. Te on the other hand was truly in touch with himself, knew who he was, & thus can remain truly calm.
Te smiled at that thought. There was a reason he was in the position he was in today, though he knew Lancaster sought to replace him. But, he didn't realize what he was really dealing with. Would his Ego be able to handle it? Probably not. In any case, Te had his own dangerous game to play, & it was time to make the next move.
"Driver, I'm in the mood for some chocolate. Take me to Ghiradelli Square."
