When ye talk of prejudice, genocide, hatred and minorities ye think perhaps of the dark of skin, or of the Jew, but do ye ever think of the Romani?  A`ver thinks ye do nae, and this greatly saddens him.  Next time ye think upon these matters, think upon the Romani as well, nais tuke (thank you).

This is a time line of the Romani and is rather interesting to see just how much the Romani are hated. Rom, Roma, Romani....all mean Gypsies

The first record of Rom are in Crete in 1322.

1544 Gypsies deported to Norway

1547 All Rom are declared outlaws in Bohemia and expelled

1554 Death penalty imposed for all Rom not leaving the country in 30 days

1557 Poland and Lithuania expel all Gypsies

1563 Italy.. Council of Trent says that Gypsies cannot be priests

1569 Lithuania and Poland declare remaining Gypsies must settle or be expelled

1573 All Rom in Scotland must settle or leave

1547 Wearing of Romni dress banned

1584 Denmark and Norway expel all Rom

1589 Death Penalty imposed for all Rom who do not leave in 30 days in Denmark.

1637 Death Penalty issued for all remaining Gypsies in Sweden

1721 Austria-Hungarian Empire: Emperor Karl VI orders the exterminations of all Romani throughout his domain.

1728 Holland.........last Roma hunted down.

1746 Gypsies to live only in named towns in Spain.

1749 Great Gypsy Round up: all in the kingdom arrested, some executed. Even Catholic Priests tuned in children at churches

1759 Gypsies banned from St. Petersburg

1782 Romani language and dress is banned in Spain

1783 Most regulations against Gypsies are repealed

1802 France imprisons the Romani

1812 Finland puts all Gypsies in workhouses

1822 England will not let Gypsies camp by the road

1830 Germany removed children under 9 from the Romani parents in hopes of integrating them.

1835 Rom hunted in Denmark

1848 slaves freed in Transylvania

1849 Rom allowed in Denmark

1855 Romani frees Gypsies slaves

1864 Romania says Rom can own land. (Rom don't believe in owning land)

1874 Muslim Rom given equal rights as Muslims in Ottoman Empire

1875 Denmark bans Rom again

1186 Bismark recommends expelling foreign Rom

1899 Germany sets up the "Police Gypsy Information Services, later renamed "The Central Office for Fighting the Gypsy Nuisance"

1906 France issues identity cards

1920 Germany sets up an organization to deal with Gypsies called Lives unworthy of Life.

1922 Germany photos and fingerprints all Romani

1926 Switzerland orders all young children taken from Gypsy families to foster parents

During WW2 all Gypsies sent to special camps in Auschwitz

1953 Rom reallowed into Denmark

1958 Bulgaria and Checkloslovakia ban Rom

1960 England bans most caravan sites

1966 Gypsy Council set up in England.

1968 England and Holland: all districts must build caravan sites

1971 First Romani Congress in London

1972 Rom ordered sterilized in Czechoslovakia

1977 Holland legalizes 500 Romani

1978 Second World Romani Congress Held in Geneva

1979 Hungary: Self taught Romani artists are allowed to have a exhibition

1981 3 World Romani Congress in Germany!

1985 France allows Romani Art Exhibit in Paris

1987 US Holocaust Memorial appoints it's frist Rom member, 7 years after it's creation.

1989 Germany attempts to export Rom and fails.

1990 4 World Romani Congress near Warsaw

in the 1990s there were attacks on the Rom in Romania,

Poland, Ukraine, Hungary ,Bulgaria, Czechs, Slovakia, Austria, Turkey ,Albania ,Greece repeatedly. In Czech Republic, Romani children could not go to the city swimming pools.
