Chapter 8--The Big Moment

Three weeks had passed since the gig at the mansion. The date is now Friday, February 16. Davy and Micky are sitting in the living room watching tv, Mike was upstairs in his room and Peter walks in the front door.

"Hey guys! Is Mike upstairs?" he asked. "Of course," said Micky. "That's where he's been all day."

Peter goes upstairs and knocks on Mike's door.

  "Who is it?"
"It's me, Peter. I was wondering if I could borrow the VCR for a while. I just got a new video."

Mike opens the door and Peter noticed how red his eyes were.

"Is something wrong?" he asked Mike. "No, I'm okay," answered Mike. "Go ahead and watch in there."

Peter goes inside Mike's room to watch the movie he rented while Mike goes downstairs to get a drink.
"Are you okay, Mike?" Davy asked. "You've been in your room a lot."

"Oh, I was just thinking about something," said Mike as he opened a can of soda.

"Are you seeing Jen again?" asked Micky. "You don't even have to ask. The answer is still yes," said Davy. "How long has it been since Peter and Jen broke up?" asked Micky. "Hiatus," Davy blurted out.

"What?" said the other two Monkees.

"Well Peter said their relationship was on hiatus. It didn't officially end ya know," explained Davy. "Thanks a lot Davy. Anyways, I think it's been almost a month," said Mike.

Later that day Micky, Davy and Peter were in the kitchen making sandwiches and making a mess. Outside, Jen and Mike were washing the car.

"Here Davy," said Micky as he gave him some bread. "Make Jen's sandwiches. I'm too busy with the drinks already."

Peter was watching Davy from the corner of his eyes.

"No wait! Jen likes the mayo between the ham and cheese, not the bread and cheese!" said Peter. "Well you do it then," Davy said as he handed Peter the sandwich. "You know what she likes." "I always thought you knew a lot about women," said Peter. "But not her!" Davy replied.

Suddenly the door opens and Jen runs through all soaking wet.

"Help! Mike is spraying me with the hose!" she yelled. "I'll get a towel," said Peter as he left the kitchen to get a towel. Jen joins Davy and Micky in the kitchen and examines the sandwich that Peter was making.

"Ooh! Ham and cheese! I hope the mayo is in the right place!" she said. "Peter warned me about that," said Davy.

Peter comes back and puts the towel around Jen's shoulders. "I bet you're cold by now," he said to her. She thanked him and smiled. As Mike walks in, Peter turns around and goes to the sink.

"Is it time to eat now?" Mike asked as he joined the others in the kitchen. "I hope so! I'm hungry!" said Jen.

The next morning, Peter climbs out of bed and stretches.

Great. I have to return that video, he thought. I didn't even finish watching it.

He goes upstairs to Mike's room and he wasn't in there. Peter sits on the bed and pushes the play button on the remote control thinking that the movie was in the VCR. Instead of the movie,he sees Mike on the screen.

Hey! It's Mike! Must be the wrong tape.

As he got up to reach for another video, Jen appeared on the screen.

Is that who I think it is?

In the video, Mike and Jen are at her house. They hug at the door and then sit on the couch.

"Jen, I have something really important to ask you," said Mike as he held Jen's hand. "What is it?" she asked.

"I am madly in love with you and I want to know if you will marry me."

Mike takes a ring out of his pocket. Jen's eyes light up but doesn't take the ring.

"But Mike! It's kinda sudden! I'm only eighteen!"
"But I love you so much! You do love me, don't you?"
"Of course I do, but we're not ready for marriage. I'm sorry. I can't marry you now."

Peter sat in amazement and looked at the date on the bottom of the screen.

Two years ago! They knew each other back then? Why didn't anybody tell me about this?

Five minutes later, Davy and Micky were watching the video.

"I can't believe she didn't marry him!" said Micky. "I always knew there was something between them," said Davy. "The way Mike would look at Jen when she was with you--"

"I have to ask them about this," said Peter as he took the video out of the VCR. "Look at the label on the tape. It says 'The Big Moment'."

"I think he was expecting her to say yes," said Micky.

Later that night Peter was sitting on the couch when Jen and Mike walked in together.

"Peter, what are you doing here?" asked Mike as he shut the door. "I live here," answered Peter. "I mean what are you doing still up? It's almost midnight," said Mike. Peter crossed his arms over his chest. "I saw the tape."

    Mike looked at Jen.

"You mean THE tape?" asked Mike. "That tape?" asked Jen. "The Big Moment," said Peter.

"There's an explanation," said Mike as he took his wool hat off. "Good. I want to hear it," said Peter.

Mike and Jen sat in various seats in the living room. Jen let out a big breath of air.

"Well it all started when I was eighteen and Mike was twenty. It was a little after I graduated from high school and Karen and I decided to go out to a club. I didn't really want to go but she convinced me somehow. We went to this one place and Mike was performing when we walked in and I instantly fell in love with him," said Jen and then looked at Mike.

"I noticed her when she walked in and we talked after the show and then we started going out together. I was in love with her. We went out for three months until I decided to pop the question. I expected Jen to say yes and I videotaped the whole thing. Now it breaks my heart to see it again," said Mike.

"Something inside me says I'm glad you said no," said Peter and then looked at Jen.

"But at that time we were too young to be getting married so I said no. Then Mike had to go to Texas for something and we said goodbye. But the weird thing is that I don't think we officially broke up," said Jen.

"I was so broken-hearted after Jen turned me down that I just had to leave her alone. Even though I was still in love with her, I just wanted to go," said Mike.

Peter sat in silence the whole time. "I was getting more suspicious of you two everyday," he finally said. "Especially after what happened in New York on your book signing tour. Even Davy and Micky said they suspected something. Now that you're together again, why don't you ask her again? Maybe this time she'll say yes."

Jen moved closer to Peter and held his hand. "Look Peter. Mike and I had a long talk today and...we're letting go of each other. Mike and I are through with our little affair and I wanna come back to you. I'm ready this time."

Inside, Peter knew he wanted to smile knowing that he was right. Jen came crawling back to him. But he still kept on his serious face.

"So no more sleeping around with Mike?" Peter asked. Mike and Jen shook their heads. "We're through," said Jen.
"And your head is straight again? There's only one guy that you're thinking about right now?"

Jen nodded and started to smile. "No more of this? You and Mike are just friends from now on?" he asked.

"Yes Peter," answered Jen. Peter looked at Mike. "Are you sure about this? It's over between the two of you?"

"Yeah. She's all yours!" said Mike. Peter still maintained a stern face. "So you're coming back to me now?" he asked Jen.

"Yes Peter! Will you take me back?"

Peter smiled and gave Jen a huge bear hug.

"Yes! Oh yes Jen I'll take you back!"
"Oh Peter! I miss those hugs so much!"
"I missed you 'cupcake'!"

He started planting kisses all over Jen's face as she ran her fingers through Peter's hair. Mike smiled at Jen and quietly went upstairs to his room.

"Oh Jen! I told you! I knew you'd come back to me!"

"I'm sorry, Peter, for everything that's happened," said Jen as she let go of Peter.

"It's okay Jen. You just had to put some closure on your past with Mike. I understand. So, how do you feel?"

"Happy!"

"Now that's what I want to hear!" he said and gave her another big bear hug.
