She looks at Peter and smiles. "Of course, Peter.
Jen never stopped talking about you." "I bet she finally shut up now," he said
as he sat down next to her. "What are you doing here anyway?" she asked. "We're
playing music for the party later," he answered. "Does Jen ever talk about me
anymore?"
"Sometimes," answered Karen. "But I shouldn't be talking about it
because you might get mad." "I won't get mad," said Peter. "I'll just be
insanely jealous."
Karen smiled. "She said she's happy with Mike. But
it's not like she wasn't happy with you. Jen says it's different with
him."
Peter looked down at the ground. "Oh," he quietly
said.
"But you know what I think?" she asked. Peter looked up at her. "I
think in the end, you'll be the one she truly loves."
"You really think so?"
Karen nodded her head and smiled. Peter smiled back.
"But Mike does look like a great man. He's the kind that women dream of. That
voice, that accent, those eyes..."
Peter just stares at Karen.
"Oh, but I'd pick you too," she said. Peter smiled and Micky pops his
head out of the door.
"Hey Pete let's go!" he said. "Oh, but he's cute too!" said Karen.
Peter stood up. Thanks a lot Karen. You cheered me up a little." "Glad I could
help," she said and Peter goes off and joins the others inside to
perform.
At Jen's house...Jen
was sitting at her desk and wrote the last words into her diary. She looked like
she was in a hurry to go somewhere and she grabbed the car keys and went
out.
Back at the
party...Karen was walking around inside and sees Mike at the punch bowl. She
walks over to the table.
"Hi Mike," she said and grabbed a cup to get some punch. "Hi Karen.
Hey, you're Jen's best friend. What does she say about me?" he asked.
"She's
crazy about you but--"
"She's still crazy about Peter too, right?"
"In a
way she is."
Peter comes up to them.
"Mike, I have to use the car for something," he said. Mike dug into his
pocket and pulled out the keys. "Be back before the next set," he told Peter.
"I'll be right back," said Peter as he took the keys, went out to the
Monkeemobile, and drove all the way to Jen's house.
"How did I end up with two sets of keys
to her house?" he asked himself as he unlocked Jen's front door. He goes in and
closes the door.
"Jen? Are you home? I came here to bring back another key
that you gave me."
He walks in her room and found that she wasn't in
there. As he was leaving the room, he noticed Jen's diary sitting on the
desk. Why would she leave it wide open? he wondered. Well if it's
wide open that means I can read it without having anyone saying that I went
through her diary.
He picked it up and started reading.
"Mike and I went back to the pad and found that the other guys were
rehearsing. Or maybe that's what they wanted us to think. Peter sang these songs
that just got to me and I almost started feeling sorry for what I did to him. I
think I'm 'wandering' again! I gotta stop this! But I know that deep down inside
I do still love Peter. I always have..."
So that singing thing did work on her! he thought to himself.
It's a good thing I sang "She" twice! At least I know that she still loves
me.
He put the
diary back down and left the house without returning the spare key.
Back at the party
the other three Monkees were wondering where Peter was.
"We have to play in two minutes!" said
Micky. "Where did he go anyway?" asked Davy. Mike looked at his watch and said
"I don't know. I gave him the keys and he took off."
Peter runs through the front door and taps on
Karen's shoulder. "I have to talk to you after the song," he told her. "What
for?" Karen asked. "It's about Jen," answered Peter.
He then goes onstage and puts his bass guitar on.
"Where were you, man?" asked Davy as he picked up a tambourine. "You
almost missed the show."
"I just had to go out," said Peter as he tuned his guitar. They play
"The Door Into Summer" as the last song. When it was over, Peter goes offstage
and finds Karen.
"I just went to Jen's house and I found out that she still loves me!"
Peter beamed. "Are you sure?"asked Karen. "It said in her diary," said Peter.
"You read her diary?"
"It was sitting there wide open for me to
read!"
"What were you doing at her house in the first place?"
"I had to
return something and she wasn't home."
"So what about Mike?"
"She still
loves him too but she wrote that she was going to wait a few days and let her
heart decide which one she really loves."
"Remember what I told you. You're
her true love, Peter."
