Chapter 5--So Goodbye Dear I Just Can't Take This Chance
Again
Two hours later, Jen was lying on her
bed staring up at the ceiling. The bedroom door opens and Peter walks in. Jen
sits up.
"Okay Jen. What's your story?" Peter asked as he closed the
door.
"Peter, I...I've been cheating on you with Mike," she quietly said.
Peter looked as if he was about to burst into tears. "Why did you do it?" he
asked.
"I don't know. I just started getting feelings for Mike and he has
feelings for me and then--"
"What did I do wrong?"
"Nothing, Peter. It's
all my fault. You didn't do anything wrong."
"Did I not give you enough
attention or affection or what?"
"No, you gave me a lot of that it's just
that--"
"It's the sex isn't it? I knew it! Just because we haven't done
anything like that yet doesn't mean you have to go doing it with somebody else!
And with one of my best friends! That's the worst part!"
"I didn't mean to
hurt you like this. I just wanted both of you in my life and I didn't want to
lose either of you."
"So you figured that you could have us both at the same
time. Who do you love, Jen? Me or him?"
Jen stared down at her feet and shook her head. "I can't answer that Peter."
Peter sat next to Jen on the bed and held her
hand.
"Answer this then. Are you happy when you're with
him?"
Jen thought for a while and then nodded slowly.
Peter took in a deep breath of air.
"As much as this is going to hurt me,
I have to do it. Jen, I love you and if want to be with Mike, then go
ahead."
Jen looked at Peter. "What?"
"If you'd
rather be with Mike, then I'll let you go. I think that you're confused right
now and you need time to get your head straight. If you love him now, fine. But
you know that I'll always love you. I just want you to be happy...even if it's
not with me."
Tears started swelling up in both of
their eyes and Peter put his arms around Jen.
"It's your decision now,"
he whispered. "Do whatever makes you happy. That's all I want."
"So does
this mean our relationship is on hold?" Jen asked. "I guess you could say that,"
answered Peter. "But don't worry about me anymore. I'm gonna be upset for a few
weeks after this but it'll turn out right in the end. When you get your head
straight again, then you can come back to me."
"I can't believe you're
letting me go off with somebody else. Are you serious about
this?"
Peter wiped the tears from Jen's cheek. "I'm
serious. As long as you're with me, I can't help but think that you want Mike at
the same time. This way, you'll just have one of us to be with. I know you'll be
back for me. But for right now we'll just be friends,
okay?"
Jen nodded and put her head down on Peter's
shoulder. "I'm going to miss you, Peter," she whispered. Peter rested his head
on hers. "Same here, cupcake," he whispered
back.

Later that afternoon, Jen was gathering her belongings from Peter's room and
putting them in a suitcase. Davy stood at the doorway.
"Are you leaving?"
he asked. "Temporarily. I'll probably be staying at my house a lot more now but
I'll be back here once in a while," she answered as she closed the
suitcase.
"Oh. I thought you were just moving upstairs," said Davy. Jen
gave him a look. "I'm not in the mood for jokes right now, Davy," she said as
she sat down on the bed. "This isn't going to feel right. Mike and I can't be
together when Peter is around. That'll bruise his heart even more."
"At
least you're still friends," said Davy as he sat next to her. "You know, I am
upset that you did that to Peter but I'm Mike's friend too, and yours. I'm not
taking sides in this but if you need to talk, I'll be here."
"Thanks
Davy," she said and got up to take her suitcase into the living room. Micky was
sitting on the stairs, Davy was leaning on the bedroom doorway, Peter was on the
back porch, and Mike was on the couch waiting for Jen. He sees Jen walk in the
living room and stands up.
"Are you ready to go?" he asked. Jen nodded
her head and headed for the front door. She turned around to take a last look at
the Pad. Then she looked at Micky and then Davy.
"I'll see you guys
around," she said and then looked out to the back porch. "Tell Peter I said
goodbye."
Micky and Davy nodded and
Mike led Jen out the door. The other two Monkees looked at each other and then
at Peter who was still standing outside.
Jen opened
the door and sat in the passenger's seat while Mike started the
engine.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Jen half-smiled and said, "Yeah, I'm
okay."
Mike backed the Monkeemobile out of the
driveway and Jen looked out the window at the Monkees' Pad.
It'll be
good to go back home, she thought. My other home, that is. No, my
rented home. The Monkees' place was my real home.
Was...
