Jens, Frederik, and Tine in Sweden (1999)

The Spanghoppers was born on St. Patrick's Day 1999, when we (Anne, Jens and Frederik) met at Jens' place in Copenhagen, and first tried playing music together. Since then a lot of people have played with us, and happily everyone seems to be having a good time. Our music is primarily Irish traditional music, but some of Anne's songs are best described as folk-rock. And when other musical genres lift their ugly heads, we are not afraid to try them on!

So who are we?

Anne sings and plays guitar in the band. Actually she also plays bodhrn, and a bit of tinwhistle and fiddle. And she writes songs. Other assets include considerate neighbors, and a huge supply of beer in the fridge, both good reasons why we often end up meeting at her place!

Frederik is Jens' younger brother. He plays bodhrn and a bit of jew's harp in the band. Latest pet instrument is assorted kinds of bagpipes.

Frederik's older brother. Jens plays tinwhistles (of all sizes) and flute in the band, and also likes to play around with the concertina. He is also the managing editor of this website, and provides the band with a steady supply of "new" tunes to play.

If Spanghoppers was a country, Jeroen would be the Dutch ambassador! He first met Jens on the internet - both being whistle geeks - and it turned out they lived a few hundred meters from each other in Copenhagen. Sometimes the world is truly a small place... In addition to whistle and flute, Jeroen writes songs, sings and plays mandolin and guitar (though not all at the same time)!

Madeleine (Frederik's girlfriend) is from Sweden, but lives in Copenhagen. She sings, and plays whistle, guitar, oboe and crumhorn! Since she plays crumhorn it should come as no surprise that she likes medieval music, and we've even tried playing a bit of it.

Stina was the first international addition to the band (she's from Iceland but lived in Copenhagen). Unfortunately she's moved away from Copenhagen... Nevertheless we count on having her with us lots of times in the future!

Jim is our American representative. He's been playing for ages, sings, plays whistle and English concertina, and knows every folk song in existance. Among other things he hosts some great parties, bakes excellent shortbread, and has a thing for whales!

Lars is the latest addition to our get-togethers! Weird thing is, as far as we know he's from Denmark! Lars has an ecclectic "folk music" background, singing and playing accordeon and pipes.
