SumoTournament in 2004
1/19 - A bunch of us gaijin spent the day at Ryogoku Kokugikan to see Day 8 of the Grand Sumo Tournament!  We had a great time, and it even turned out to be a somewhat historic day for sumo wrestling.
L: Dale at the stadium.  One of the lower-level bouts is taking place behind him.  R: Both of us after the day was done!
R: Kathleen convinced me to sneak down to the expensive seats to have an up-close look at one of the bouts.
Above and R: The ceremony to begin the next round of bouts.  The wrestlers are wearing decorative skirts (a bit more modest than the regular gear) that have their sponsors' advertisements on them.
Above: Judges deciding the winner of a close bout.
Above:  The ring was swept after each ceremony and bout.
Now for the real big guys!
Above L:  Entrance ceremony for the West side wrestlers.  Above and L: The yokozuna (Takanohana) performing the ring-entering ceremony.  Yokozuna is the highest rank in sumo, and only 4 wrestlers can hold this title at one time.  Two wrestlers held the rank of yokozuna on this night (Musashimaru was absent), but...
Below L: Ozeki-ranked (2nd rank) Asashoryu gets prepared for his bout.  R: The bout.  Asashoryu (from Mongolia) is on the verge of qualifying for yokozuna.
And then!  The yokozuna bout!  Even the referee must earn a certain rank to judge the yokozuna matches.  Below L: Takanohana prepares for his bout.  R: Takanohana just before he is flung out of the ring.  He retired from sumo after this bout, leaving only one yokozuna in sumo.  So, we saw the historic last fight!
