At my last dr. appointment on March 24th, Dr. Lieberman told me I was about 3cm along and very ready to have the baby. He said he still thought you were quite large, so if I didn't go into labour on my own that week that I would come into the hospital on Tuesday March 30th to be induced. Well the week went by with baby still happily in utero, so on tuesday morning at 6:30am the hospital called and told us to be there by 8:00 am. Steve got up and made me some scrambled eggs and toast and we sat pretty much in silence until 7:30. Don't think we knew whether to be excited or scared. I packed the last of my overnight bag and we walked down the street to the misericordia. We registered at the front desk and went upstairs where we met dr. Lieberman in the hall. He'd been up all night and looked a bit frazzled. Our nurse was amazing. They all were but she was the best. She was a student and it was her last day so she was excited to get to deliver one more baby. Because I was strep B +, they hooked me up to IV antibiotics and dr. Lieberman came in to break my water. This was about 9am. It was the most disgusting feeling. It was like I'd wet myself and every time I moved I soaked another towel! Then I assumed they would wait and let nature take it's course, but no...they started the pitocin drip immediately and doubled the dose every 15 minutes. for the first hour things were great. Steve and I just sat there watching TV. But at 10:00am the contractions came hard and furious. It literally took my breath away. The nurses kept getting upset and telling me to breath. I think that all the stuff you learn about breathing in prenatal class is useless when it comes down to reality. I tried to get in the shower and it felt good for awhile but then the pitocin acted as a laxative and after moving from shower to toilet 10 times I was ready to get back in bed. Besides, the contractions were maybe a minute apart and I was getting exhausted. Probably from holding my breath so much. by 12:00 or so I couldn't take it any more. They offered me morphine and something else and I thought ' okay at least I'm not giving in to the epidural'. But a few minutes later the 2nd nurse walked in and checked to see how far along I was. She said I was about 5cm and asked again what I wanted for pain relief. I burst into tears, looked over at Steve and told him I had to have an epidural. I felt like such a failure. I wanted to do this naturally so bad. The anesthesiologist came right away and had the cath in my back in no time. By this point there was no break in the contractions and it was so hard to sit still. At 12:45 gramma tingley came in with jessica to see how I was doing and I couldn't even talk to them. All I remember is being sooo tired and just laying on my side with my eyes closed wondering when this would all be over. The epidural wasn't really taking effect and I could completely feel one side still. So the nurse went to call the anesthesiologist for a 2nd dose. It was going to be a bit before he could make it. At 1pm g'ma and jess left and my main 2 nurses went for lunch. Not 10 minutes past and all of a sudden I told steve 'I think I'm pushing'. Before I knew it my nurses were back, dr.Lieberman was there and an intern. It seems like you were crowning forever. I would push as hard as I could through a contraction and dr.L kept saying 'one more push is all it will take' but by then the contraction was over and I'd say 'I can't. It's done.' dr. L tried to help and made a huge episiotomy. I got to reach down and feel your head and the first question I asked was if you had any hair. At 1:37 our little baby girl was born much to our surprise. We thought it was a boy. G'ma and Jess came back at 1:45 to bring steve a booster juice because they thought he looked a bit wiped out and to their surprise everything was over. I ended up drinking the entire thing. I was so hungry. After baby was weighed and all we were moved to a private theme room with a double bed so steve got to spend the night.

Some things I didn't expect with the birth/first few weeks:
1. The after pain of stitches etc. I though the pain was gone a few days after birth not a few weeks
2. That breast feeding would come natural not be such a struggle
3. Other little things like struggling to lose weight  but I'd do it again asap.
