They lived at or near the Mouth of Salisbury Branch on Right Beaver Creek in Knott County. They are buried near the Turner Cemetery just below the Mouth of Salisbury Branch on the Right Bever Creek in Knott County, Kentucky. Wiliam Martin sold this farm to James Martin, Millie's husband. As women could not own land at theis time, the deed was made to James Martin, the husband of Millie Martin, on February 9, 1818, recorded in deed book A., page 496, in the Floyd County Clerks Office at Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Martin was in his home a lot as he was our neighbor and relative. Simpson Martin was a first cousin to Joel Martin, Jr., the grandfather of W.S. Martin. He requestd them to bury him in the bottom as he said he had worked on the rough hill and had killed himself. So they buried him in the little bottom opposite the old home. -W.S. Jane married Benjamin SMITH son of Katherine. Benjamin was born in Dec 1838. Benjamin enlisted in the confederate army on 10/23/1861 at Prestonburg for a twelve month term in Company E of the Fifth Ky. Infantry. he fought in the battles of Middlecreek and Princeton, W.V.. he was discharged at Hazel Green on 10/20/1862, but re-enlisted on the same day in Company F of the 13th Ky. Calvary under Col. Ben Caudill, and was promoted to second Seargeant on or before 12/30/1863. He was listed as absent with leave, sick on that day. The 13th went on to be a part of General John Hunt Morgan's famous calvary command and fought under him in the battles of Cynthiana and Mt. Sterling, in 1864. The 13th surrendered and disbanded at Christiansburg, Va. on April 12, 1865. Ben smith lived on Jones Fork, seved with Dan Howard of Lackey, Ky. during the Civil War. He served under Capt. Adam Martin and Col. ben Caudill of Whitesburg, Ky. During his service, Ben took part in a firing squad to kill Scritch (of the Yankee Home guard). Scritch's crimes were many. Bom on December 3, 1938, in Knott County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron (Ernie) and Virginia Richmond Clifton. She was retired from the Johnson County School System, where she was a teacher for 30 years; a member of the First Baptist Church at Mousie; a member of the Eastern Star No. 497 at Lowmanville; and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include one son, Chester Witten of Thelma; one brother, Franklin Clifton of Virginia; and one sister, Nancy Bormes of Printer. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Clyde Wicker officiating. Burial was in the Campbell Cemetery at Mousie.
