| Lindsey Martin was born in 1854 to John Henderson and Polly (Higgins) Martin. His paternal grandparents were James and Millie (Martin) Martin, and his paternal great grandparents were William and Susannah *(Tudor)* Martin. Lindsey married Aletha (Martin), born 1861, the daughter of Richard and Winnie (Sizemore) Martin. Her paternal grandparents were Joel and Rebecca (Fletcher) Martin, daughter of Jacob Fletcher. Aletha's paternal great grandparents were also William and Susannah *(Tudor)* Martin. Aletha's mother Winnie (Sizemore) was the daughter of George "Golden Hawk" Sizemore and Aletha (Goodman). Richard and Winnie (Sizemore) Martin deeded ninety-nine acres of land to Aletha and Lindsey as a wedding gift and on this land was built a large log home. The land was developed into a prosperous farm which amply provided for them, their children and several of their grandchildren. Aletha and Lindsey were the parents of two sons and two daughters, all born on Ball Branch, as they had been. Their children were as follows: 1. Tom, married Hester Amburgey, and their children are, Ralph, married Liddie Campbell; Geneva married Ed Vanderpool; Winnie, married George Wolf; June married Carl Howard; Geraldine, married Jimmy Sweet; Sue, married Oliver Birch; Hawley, married Virginia Orsborne; James, married Alice Hosley; Richard, married Phyllis Hoplins; Peggy married Richard Byrd. 2. Richard, married Elizabeth (Pack), son Lindsey died two days after birth. 3. Lora, married Monroe Gayheart, one child, Gardie Martin Gayheart. 4. Virgie, married William Richmond, children are: Virginia, married Aaron Clifton, and William, married Emily?. Although Lindsey and Aletha received very little formal education, Lindsey saw to the building of the first school in the Ball Branch Community. Their children obtained as much schooling as possible from the local school, which in those days went beyond the traditional elementary school. Their son Richard attended Professor Byington's Teacher's College at Louisa, and taught school for many years. Lindsey and Aletha Martin resided in Knott County throughout their life. Lindsey died in 1938, at the age of eighty-four, and Aletha died in 1957, at the age of ninety-six. *I now believe that Susannah's last name was actually Meador instead of Tudor.* |
