The little band known as LIVE hit it big, but not too fast. Perhaps that's why they're one of the best today. Edward Kowalczyk, Chad Gracey, Chad Taylor, and Patrick Dalheimer, residents of the small town of York, Pennsylvania, started their garage band; for fun. They named it PUBLIC AFFECTION, and four years later,in 1989, the band came out with their first album, DEATH OF A DICTIONARY. Eventually, they packed up their talent, and PUBLIC AFFECTION took a trip to New York City.
In New York, the band played at clubs and bars, until eventually they were noticed by Phil Schuser from Radioactive Records. Phil Schuser gave them a record deal, and under the new name of LIVE, the four guys came out with MENTAL JEWLERY. Their first single from the album was OPERATION SPIRIT, and was soon put into the MTV buzz bin. Three years later, with the help of producer Jerry Harrison and executive producer Gary Kurfirst, LIVE released THROWING COPPER. It was a hit, and the first single, SELLING THE DRAMA immeadiately went to number one on the Billboard Music Charts. After Woodstock II, LIVE released their second single from THROWING COPPER, LIGHTNING CRASHES. LIGHTNING CRASHES is the most well know LIVE song today, and obviously went to the number one slot pretty fast.
After being on tour for 18 months, a total of 252 shows, LIVE took a break. In the meantime, in 1995, they were named artist of the year. A year later they returned to the studios and began recording their next hit album, SECRET SAMADHI. SECRET SAMADHI was a huge hit, with the first single, LAKINI'S JUICE. LAKINI'S JUICE was then followed by FREAKS, and TURN MY HEAD. The last single released from SECRET SAMADHI was RATTLESNAKE, which was not as big of a hit as the others, but because it's LIVE, of course it's good.
LIVE was sceduled to release a fourth album, the DISTANCE TO HERE, in April. However, the band felt that they needed more time on the album, and returned to the studio. LIVE recorded over twenty tracks for the album, but only released thirteen. THE DISTANCE TO HERE is now scheduled for release on October 5, 1999. THE DOLPHIN'S CRY, the first single, was released in late August, followed by RUN TO THE WATER. LIVE toured for the winter, and later started a new tour with the band THE COUNTING CROWS. LIVE then returned to the studio and plans to release a new album spring 2001. The first single, DEEP ENOUGH, was played during the double bill tour, and loved greatly by LIVE fans everywhere.
