CAMPING
This Summer I was fortunate enough to visit the beautiful city of Yellowknife, NWT. I took many pictures up there and most of them are able to tell the story of my trip quite well. I had some funny adventures and some serious revelations. I saw wonderous sites (Like the Northern lights for the first time) and some absolutely tacky ones (see picture of green house). The trip started in Calgary and began with a 26 hour bus ride up to Yellowknife through Edmonton, Peace River, & Enterprise. We stayed in Yellowknife for 3 days, then Car camped back down to Calgary through Fort Simpson, Fort Providence, Fort Liard, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Grande Cache, & Jasper. Here are some pictures of us Kat, Aleta and I.
On our way up via Greyhound, we met this young man Named Utaka. He was originally from Japan but decided to leave his family and come to Canada to do highschool in Vancouver. He had just graduated and before going into Technology Egineering in Ontario he decided to take a trip up to Yellowknife by himself. This is Kat and him at a small diner in the wonderful little town of ENTERPRISE. Food , o.k. view....well there wasn't much of one.
Our Bus driver's name was Adrian. Though he wasn't supposed to stop at any tourist attractions, he felt sorry for us 'cause it was our first time up there. He made sure that we stopped at the Border into NWT. Then he took us on a small hike to visit Alexandra falls, located along the Athabasca River. It was HUGE. The water will actually freeze in the winter and people will go Ice climbing on it. In the summer (when we went) the water was brown everywhere due to the fast paced river and high silt content.
The name says it all. Sadly I don't remember where this was but it was just past Enterprise and it was sunset. It gives you an idea of how isolated and lonley it is up there. It also makes you appreciate Yellowknife!!!
We hadn't seen her in 4 months. We were very Aleta deprived. So at 11:00 pm when we hit Yellowknife we were rarin' to see her. As soon as I got near the entrance of the bus I snapped this shot. A great way to be welcomed to a foreign city!
We saw these on our way home, driving to fort Providence. These are just some of the animals we saw. We also ran into a Black bear, fox, elk and a Very friendly Dog, we named Barton (I don't have the picture of him scanned though).
This was a Jolly man who gladly took our picture of us on the ferry crossing the Jean Marie River. He stopped to talk and asked us where we ere headed. Then he went to his truck and came back with the weather forcast for the next 5 days, and some NWT temporary tatoos! What a seet man. I had to take his picture. On a side note though. While he was taking our picture, some young souls in a delivery truck decided to take our picture too... with THEIR CAMERA.... I guess they don't see 3 young blonde females everyday.... hmmmm.
On our way back We stayed in the Blackstone Campgrounds in Laird River. It was beautiful. We had a great time Hiking along the bank of the Liard. thought the ground was quite silty, we were able to walk on it with relative ease. Our destination while we hiked was to get to this white structure, located just off the side of the river. We thought it might have been a church... It wasn't
Turns out that what we thought was a Church was actually an abandoned ship land locked. Duh! We had a pretty fun time exploring.... we went all the way up.... Well I went ALL THE WAY up to the captain's quarters and started playing with the CB radios and steering the thing. It was soo cool, and yet so childish... hey who said we had to be grown up anyway.
So we had to cross this creek to get to our destination (see Abandoned ship), and there were only 2 ways to do this. 1. was walking right through, which you could do with sandals like Kat did. the other was to shimmy across the log to the other side, which Aleta did on her bum. I didn't want to get my pants dirty and I couldn't cross in my running shoes so I had a "Bright Idea" to Tightrope across the log. All went well unitl I was about half way across. The log started to get thinner and thinner and more and more wobbly. I was so worried that I'd fall. As soon as I saw land I was so relieved that I jumped down. Happy that I had made it across and didn't get myself dirty I was too preocupied with my sucess that I didn't see where I was stepping and THUNK! Landed in silt up to my knee. That picture is of me screaming and laughing at the same time. Only something like this would happen to me! :)
Do we kick butt or what? This beauty was made with Wet wood and NO paper!!!! Wait till you see the end results. Beauty!
No, my hand is NOT on her bum. It's about a foot away, though it is hard to tell. Aleta asked me to pose... so I did, jokingly but she snapped the pic anyway. Thanks muchly 'Leets! Remind me to get some blackmail Pictures of you eh? ;)
No it's not Pinocchio. Kat is lovingly, drying my shoes after 2 days fo not having them due to my stupid incident (see Tightrope walking). We were in Andy Baily former Provincial Park and the only wood availible to us were 2x4s. But we made due and it came in pretty handy for Klutzes like me!
In Jasper National Park. (remind me to put a link there)
He was this nice guy From Israel that decided to backpack from Calgary to Prince Ruptert in Northern B.C. Good luck boy! Wow. We shared our cooking space with him and he gave us cookies and Coffee. Thanks man, they were great! We realized though that sometimes it is handy to have a guy around... especially when chopping wood. chopping ratio: Us 10 to his 1. Thanks man!
