Okey Johnston DESKINS

It happened on an October day in 1902. Save for the rustling of the leaves in the great apple trees which were all around the little log house in the head of the hollow there was a hush, a great quiet... A woman was in in travel and with the midwife, Sally, who was more in name than in profession, prays and sorrows and pain swept over her countenance, traveling in birth and pains to be delivered. In that hour, Rebecca was like a mariner at sea without a compass, save for the everlasting arms of GOD, upon which all turn to in their darkest hours. Then came the boy, Rebecca in her childish faith had prayed and GOD had answered. A son was born and the mother rejoices... To the midwife, Sally, she had suceeded, although she had done nothing, except look on, a little hot water, the baby washed and dressed; yes, all was well. Little did Rebecca know what part Sally would eventually play in the future of her destiny... As I said before it was in October, the apples were ripe and the breezes sent all the rare perfumes that GOD and nature provides... Written by Okey Johnston Deskins THE LEGEND OR STORY OF THE "DEERSKIN BABY." In the early 1800's,a man was riding along a trail through the forest. He suddenly saw an object lying in the path. as he drew nearer or closer, he heard the cries of a baby. He got off his horse and walked toward the baby. He found a baby boy wrapped in a "deerskin" cloth. The chid was an Indian boy. The man had no choice but to take the baby home with him. He named the Indian child John Deerskin and raised him with his other children. When John Deerskin grew up, he married a white woman and they had seven boys. The name Deskins is believed to have been derived from the name Deerskin; after removing one "e" and adding an "s" to the end, Deerskin becomes Deskins... All these events took place in Tazewell County, Tazewell, Virginia.... This was the story that has been passed down for many generations....per Sandra Deskins Rattfield's research.

Agnes and Okey were married in 1920 or 1921...The two had twins, Charles H. andAlice Rebecca Deskins born Feb. 12, 1922, in Norfolk, VA. at Norfolk Prot. Hospital...Charles H. died as a baby on May 10, 1924... Agnes and Okey were divorced on Sat., Oct 16, 1937 in Savannah, GA. per Sandra Deskins Rattfield's Research.
