William Rufus STAMPS

Rufus Stamps purchased a plantation in Locust Hill Township from the Moore Family. The house was built in the 1700's and was a brick two story buildind, with beautiful hand carved woodwork. The brick having been shipped from Endland. Per Frances Laleman's Research.


Martha Frances MOORE

The Will of Alexander Moore, of Halifax Co., father of Martha Stamps, gave her certain slaves. Her brother Samuel Moore, refused to abide by the provisions of her father's will and give the slaves to her. Rufus and Martha Stamps sued Samuel for the slaves. The suit was dismissed in the December term of Court in 1854, Caswell County, on the grounds that the Court lacked jurisdiction. Per Frances Laleman's research.

Wills 1792-1797, pg. 275 Recoded Sept 26, 1796 Account against the estate of Tarleton Moore, by his guardian, Francis Moore. 1805 Halifax Co. Va - Tarlton Moore - Ensign in 1st Battallion of 69th Regiment of Virginia Militia. 1807 Halifax Co. Va - Tarlton Moore - Recommended Cornet in 69th Regiment of Virginia Militia. July Court 1830 Halifax Co. Va Elizabeth Moore is in court to settle the accounts of Tarlton Moore dec'd, she states he died Nov 11, 1829 and list the following children John B. Moore, Armistead Moore, Edward Moore, Catherine Moore and Sarah Moore. Per Frances Laleman's research.


Armistead MOORE

The following info was found at the Smith Co. Library in Carthage, Tennessee. Capt. Armistead Moore Sr. Died: Aug 11, 1842 at his home on Round Lick Creek, Smith Co. Tennessee. Hid tombstone reads - Sacred to the Memory of Armistead Moore Who died Aug 11, 1843 Aged 69 years Will of Armistead Moore Smith Co. Tennessee Dated: Oct 1835 Supp;ement #1; Oct 1835 Supplement #2: March 1842 Proven in Smith Co. Court - Sept 1842 In the name of God Amen, I Armistead Moore of the County of Smith and State of Tennessee being of sound mind and perfect memory considering the uncertainty of this mortal life for the same do make and publish this my last Will and Testement. I give to my wife Tabitha Moore all my property both real and personal during the lifetime of said Tabitha Moore. I also allow the said Tabitha to give to each of our Children that has had no Negro from me, one Negro, if she shall think best to do so. It is also my will that all property that I have given to my children or that my said wife Tabitha may give them after my decease shall be valued at the valuation it was worth when they received it. Only one Negro boy Ceasar which I Bill Sales to my son William B. Moore some years past which does not belong to me, but belongs to my son William B. Moore for services done me some years ago. Then at the death of the said Tabitha, the Eleven Children shall have their equal part as follows. It is my will that my daughter Frances B. hardwick equal portion of my estate be in the hands of my two sons William B. Moore and Samuel B. Moore for the benefit of said Frances B. and her children. It is also my will that my son John H. Moore equal portion of my estate be in the hands of the said William B. Moore and Samuel B. Moore and they use to the best advantage for the benefit of the said John H. Moore and his children. It is also my will that if my wife Tabitha Moore die before the marriage of my daughter Catherine Moore that she have Two Hundred Dollars of my estate (?) for her benefit. It is also my will that if my said wife Tabitha die before my son Bird Moore comes of age that he have Two Hundred Dollars of my estate for his benefit. It is also my will that my two sons William B. Moore and Samuel B. Moore have my two oldest Negroes name Richard and Ceasar and divide them between themselves as they shall think best. It is also my will that my three oldest Negro women name by Sarah, Judy and Dorothy live with which of my children they shall choose to live with at the death of my said wife Tabitha. I do by appoint my said wife Tabitha Executrix and my son William B. Moore Executive to this my last Will and Testement. Moore if they shall think best, sell all my land on Round Lick for the benefit of my said wife Tabitha that she may wish all the proceeds there to move all my estate to any part of the Continent that said William B. Tabitha Adams BOWEN

Tabitha Bowen was 17 years old when she married Armistead Moore in May of 1796. She was named after her grandmother Tabitha Adams who died in 1776. Tabitha Bowen's mother was Martha Russell, daughter of William Washington Russell and Tabitha Adams.(It has been posted that Tabitha Adams Bowen was the 2nd wife of William Washington Russell. This is incorrect and I hope this helps to set it straight) Tabitha's stone reads - Sacred to the Memory of Tabitha Moore who died Sept 14, 1855 Aged 77 years 23 days Smith Co. Wills 1803 - 1896 (Abstract) Moore Tabitha, 23 Mar 1855 Supplement to Will May 20, 1855 (Formaly Tabitha Bowen) "My land known as the Round Lick tract descended to me from my Revolutionary father, William Bowen" Dec'd husband Armsted Moore.
