Joseph John Gaffke, known as Babe, died in Southwest Detroit Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. He was married to Eva Ann Angell. He was working as a Security Guard for a steel manufacturing company. Babe was a World War II Veteran. Accoring to his Navy Discharge Records, he was a Water Tender Third Class. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945 from the USN for Sep Cen, Great Lakes, Ill. He received the Asiastic-Pacific Ribbon - 2 stars, Philippine Liberation - 1 star, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Ribbon. His service was at Const. Batt's. USNCTC Wim. Virginia 104 Naval Const. Batt. He was inducted into the service on June 3, 1943. He spent two years, six months and five days in the service. His civil information stated his place of employment at the Cadillac Motor Company, Detroit, Michigan from 9/40 until 5/43 as a Mechanic and Chrome Plater. His last year of education was ninth grade; course of study was English. His thumbprint is on the record along with earnings while in the service. On his Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Department, it stated that Joseph was enlisted on June 2, 1943 at Apprentice Seaman at Detroit, Michigan. He reported for active duty on June 3, 1943 and transferred to Naval Construction Training Center, Williamsburg, Virginia. It also listed his physical description as having blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion. He was 5'9" tall and weighed 153 pounds. Living Jorgensen has the original records.
