Metrocon 2004
This pic pretty much describes the general mood for Metrocon...laid back, relaxed, and slightly O_o? I arrived early Saturday to find that the preregistration booth was closed til 9am, so we decided to kill some time and eat at the resturaunt in the hotel...bad mistake. The food was a rip off for fruit, bread, and slimy eggs covered in either cream sauce or mayonaise...a breakfast which is usually free at places like Days Inn, Microtel, and others. (considered "lesser" hotels, but no mayonaise eggs thank goodness)
But enough resturaunt and hotel bashing, on to the con itself. Due to the huge increase in attendance, there was extreme crowding at metro--to the point of rediculous. There was a limit on the amount of people who could fit in the "grand ballroom" of about 1/5 of the people who wanted to see it, as well, almost everything but the panel rooms were incredibly crowded. Unfortunately for me, I could not keep track of time, or I would not have missed so mant things I wanted to see, but that's on my own head.
As for the congoers themselves, it seemed like about half the people were rude as hell, pushy, nasty, or psycho, like the guy who would not leave me alone while I was in line. Thankfully, the other half was nice, normal people who were easy to talk to, pleasant, and courteous. Seeing that the only time I saw a staffer more than 3 seconds was when one was screaming at the people in the aisle to move, etc. I didn't have a good impression of the con staff, however that was only one person.
Since there were so many events (thankfully placed over a couple of days) that I was interested in, I want to go back in 2005. As well, despite some time hangups, the main events ran practically on time, which counts for extra points. As well, the admission is reasonable, and the hotel was rather pleasant.
All in all, if I had a watch and a cattle prod, I would have had a better time, and I will shoot for this one again next year.
