Home AFO5 Report
After a rather hectic Friday, we headed to Orlando rather late to check into our hotel for the next two nights (And I strongly recommend the Microtel, it was clean, nice, *quiet* and had free breakfast!) Unfortunately we were too late to register, and probably a good thing that we didn't. After picking up a con schedule from the cosplaylab booth, we decided not to get the full weekend passes.
Now, I have nothing afainst AFO personally, they got a nice, spacious location, etc...but I went and competed in the costume contest Saturday (for both fun as well as competition) but spending all day trying to do it is rediculous...I feel even worse for the people who decided to enter in both cosplay and costume contests, as their day was shot.
Now don't get me wrong, the staffers, judges, attendees, etc were great on all levels and helpful, courteous and kind. Everyone I spoke to was pleasant, and there was none of the conventional screeching at the contestants.
However, for 25.00 a day I expect some entertainment. Almost everything conflicted with some aspect of the hours of
"hurry up and wait" that entering the competition provided. To boot, the con was spread over several buildings, and most non-major events were difficult or impossible to find. The dealer's room was very open and had a great selection this time, as well, the artists tables had plenty of room.
Unfortunately, I was rather bored, tired, and almost totally fried by the time we left the con, not to mention confused and pissed as to why I spent so much to get so little. I think this will be the 3rd and final time I go to AFO...not because it was totally and completely crap, but because of sheer boredom. Probably the same reasons I am dropping AE from my con list as well. If you are looking for a good first con, this is not the place to go.
