okay, so we finally received full results in the national contest between black college newspapers (very prestigeous in this field) .. we won! we won BEST news coverage, best online website (me!), best sports coverage, best overall photography, a ton of runnerup's and honorable mentionings... our tinsy winsy little paper KICKS ASS, thank you very much. i'm beyond proud.

it's amusing because we are such a small paper and we've only been able to enter the contest the past three years: the first year we won very little, last year we won EVERYTHING, including best paper so they changed the rules so we couldn't enter the best paper category (we are only tri-weekly) and STILL we kicked ass in every category except for the one they wouldn't let us enter. we are so the underdog, it's amazing that such a small staff with the small resources we've got kick so much ass. hee!

okay, must continue paints my nails with tipex. i enjoy abusing our office supplies.

i only have one more final to go before i'm done. it's on poetry (william cullen bryant, henry wadsworth longfellow, walt whitman and dinky emily dickinson) so i'm not too worried. almost done! woo woo! if you still think i seem too hyper, it may have something to do with my roommate leaving today as well - note that i like her, it's just going to be nice to have the room all to myself my last 4 days in america.

yes, i decided to stay until sunday. the $25 dollars i saved on not changing my ticket paid for my first ever portable cd player. i'm ecstatic. i have wanted one for about 10 years now. it's hard to explain, but let's just say you cannot get a portable cd player in Sweden for less than $90-100. the odds of me ever having $100 available on one purchase has been ridiculous - i just don't spend that way.

oh, no no, i'm not thrifty - i'm just used to thinking small. i'm more likely to spend $100 on renting movies, eating out and such over the span of a month than spend it all at once. i'm frivolous either way. it's just a sum thing. $10 here and there is worlds apart from $100 here and now. you know? well, anyway.

to contrast: i spent yesterday with a friend and her kid. in the evening, my friend and her husband went to look at used cars and ended up driving out of there with a swanky weird car (isuzu vehicross! outer space car!) that they paid for in full. they felt pretty damn cool about that too.

buying things you want is very cool - being able to pay for it and still not wreck your finances is amazing.

mmm, capitalism! snerk!
