Q: what's the worst thing that can happen when somebody hires you to design a webpage for them?

A: discovering again and again and again that you are a crappy webdesigner with unbecoming limits to what you can do.

no, no, i've got good ideas. it's not the design part in my head that is lacking, i've got a handful good concepts for this particular project already, just floating about finished and snazzy and all. it's my innability to realize them that's the problem. i'm embarrassingly limited when it comes to actually doing the graphics and then coding it all together seamlessly.

"so, use an editor?"

i can't. no no, no weird geek pride involved -- i just never figured out how to use one. when i started to code (all by accident) i was taught a few simple html commands and given a notepad to use them in. and now, 6 years later, i'm still typing html commands into notepad because that's all i know how to. granted, i enjoy it, i feel in control and proud that i wrote it all (though this layout is hardly one of my finer moments) so yey for notepad. but. it also limits me, because suddenly i will encounter really obnoxious, small problems with no way out of them (and a suspicion that in an editor, i could probably fix it by a few mouse clicks).

suddenly i'm three hours away from when i said i'd show some design ideas and i've got nothing. oh, no no, i mean i do have them -- there's the red and black version with a nice red meny shape that just won't quite melt together, there's the really sterile b&w one with all sharp, thin, black edges that --surprise!-- also won't quite work because i can't get the tables to work seamlessly -- but to show? no.

buh.

oh well. fuck it. i've got old, live pj harvey moaning in my headphones. i'll deal. (or most likely disappear out of the contractors view until monday night when i'll hopefully have something to show.)
