Professor Craw's Classroom Trivia
Writing this from a Professor's perspective, I had to take some liberties and work out some basic ideas on school scheduling which doesn't necessarily coincide with Rowlings but I used what I knew from the first four books as a basis. I wanted it to make some practical sense as well as for as how much each individual teacher was teaching, and how they handled the class load.
First and second years have 2 hour class blocks, while all other years have 1 hour class blocks. They have any particular class twice a week, unless it's a double. For example, in the same time slot they may have a mon-tue class, a wed-thur class, and a double class on Friday. (This can be quite agonizing if it's a first year and the subject happens to be potions.)
First and second years have: Potions, Herbology, History, Charms, Transfiguration, Defense and also Traditional recreation (only 1 hr class, includes flying lessons.) They have 27 hours of class time, with one afternoon (or morning) off a week. Later years can have anywhere from 20-35 hours of class time (or more if you're Hermione Granger) a week. Note, however, 20 hours is deceiving, for they also have a lot more out of classroom homework than 1st and 2nd years as well. Most students from 3rd to 7th average about 24 hours a week.
3rd-7th years have to take Potions, Herbology, History, Charms, Transfiguration and Defense as well, plus a large variety of electives.
It should be remembered a lot of these classes probably have subcategories;divination might have one on crystal balls specifically, and healing arts might include anatomy, mending, proper use of remedies etc.
To graduate, they need at least:
25 credits in Physical Arts (such as Herbology, Potions, Item Charming, Item Creation Theory, Potion Dabbling, Arithmantics, Scroll and Spell Writing)
21 credits in Practical Arts (Charms, Transfiguration, Defense)
7 credits in History (Hogwarts, Ancient, Pre-modern, and Modern)
5 credits in Esoteric Arts (Astrology, Divination, Symbology)
5 credits in World Arts (Care of Mystical Creatures, Muggle studies, Healing Arts, Government)
2 credits in Traditional Recreation (Broom training, Quidditch training, ChaserBall, Air Cricket, Winter sports)
Plus they need a combined total of 165 credits to graduate.
In the first three books, Professor Craw spends about 32 hours in class time, plus has a 2 hour block and a one hour block of conference time every week for talking to students, detentions, meetings and research. She also spends about 12 hours outside the classroom grading and in prep work, (magic dictation and copying just doesn't solve everything.) On the weekends, she often has two 4-hour security shifts. Add in Sparring Club and that's about 55 hours a week! Add in supervising the paper and that's about 58 hours a week! Good thing she loves her job. She makes starting salary for a Major Art Professor, which is 75 galleons a month (plus free room and board) which equates to about $36,000 a year.
Books 4-7, the Sentinel Series, is loosely based on a combination of Arthurian and Celtic legends, surrounding specifically the Callum Seal, and most the research info gathered I got from the web.  (yaay web!)  I hope you enjoy the twists and ironies that these combinations create in the series, it was actually pretty fun researching it and plotting it together.
