Name: Jennifer Calk Subject/grade: 8th Grade Math Class Lesson: Sudoku Puzzles Objective: Learn strategies to solve various sudoku puzzles TEKS: 8.2A and 8.2C Materials: Sudoku puzzle examples, elmo, chalk board/dry erase board, Magic Squares book. Lesson adjustments if needed for some students: have sudoku puzzles on various levels and different types. Focus: Give hard puzzle to see prior knowledge of students, understand how to solve sudoku puzzles. Concept Discovery: To teach strategies on how to solve sudoku puzzles, the history of sudoku puzzles, magic squares and latin squares, read book about Magic Squares. Show examples of all three (sudoku puzzles, magic squares, latin squares) Practice:(guided) Talk about strategies to solve sudoku and solve a 4x4 grid at the same time on the board. Do a 9x9 grid together on the elmo and discuss the strategies Practice:(independent) Let the students finish the puzzle by looking at the rows the same as the columns and finally look at the bolded out boxes. Walk around to see if anyone has questions and help out as needed. Evaluation: Go over answers to puzzle out loud and if anyone made a mistake explain why the puzzle is solved the way it is. Extension: Ask a question about Magic Squares. Can the boxes of a 9x9 grid be a magic square and as a challenge go home and create a sudoku puzzle and I will give bonus points to the students who can create one that's a magic square. Closure: Ask Bloom's questions to students; make sure students have an understanding of sudoku puzzles.
