This book is the first in the Dark Tower series. This book delves into the life of Roland, the last gunslinger, and his quest for the dark tower. In this novel, we follow Roland at the beginning of his quest and a good base for the rest of the series is built. In other books we further explore roland and the other characters the follow hime (to help or to hinder) on his journey to the tower.
I enjoyed this book and I am slowly making my way through the rest of the series. A must read for any fantasy/western/alternative universe/Stephen King fan.

This is an excellent fantasy novel, set in contemporary Russia. The novel deals with the idea of "others" people with powers who, when they discover they have powers, must choose between being light or being dark. When they choose a side, they may be eligible for the day watch or the night watch, where they police both the light and dark to maintain the rules of the treaty set long ago which allows both sides to co-exist.
This novel opens up a four book series and has led to the creation of two movies. If you like contemporary, thought provoking fantasy, then I suggest you give this novel a try.
