Miss JENNIE ROBBINS

Hello Lads an' Lassies. My name is Jennie Robbins. I arrived from Scotland only two year and four month ago. I decided to travel to the shores of The United states of America, which me father still calls a colony, after corresponding with a fine young soldier named Iain Smith. He was from my home town of Ayre and came to the COLONY some 10 year ago to make his fortune. He was always sweet on me, was iain. He would write me poetry. I came to Virginia, in the US of A and was plannin' on marryin' my iain in July, 1861. he had a fine blacksmith's shop. But before our weddin' day, war broke out, and he fought in the battle they call bull run and was killed. now I'm in this country with noone to watch over me and there is a war! What shall I do? I will take in sewing jobs to keep from starvin'. That I can do. I'm not a young woman so my prospects of marryin' again are slim, although I 'm hearing that soldiers can be mighty lonely. Maybe I shouldn't give up on the idea yet.

I moved to Missouri in winter of 1862 and these lads are just a wee bit too proud of themselves 'cause they've been fightin' the war longer here than in the east of the United states of America. I never know whether I'm with confederates or union loyalists because you never know here in the mid-western part of this country. I hope I live through this terrible war. I like to sit on the porch in the eve and sing me old songs by Robert Burns. Me father taught me a few. If anyone knows about the battle in Scotland that took place at Schehallion, that the lowlands, the highlands, the borders and the islands all drink to, would you please tell me about it?????
