Unlike most of the other birds in the Manyara Bird Sanctuary at the Honolulu Zoo, this Hammerhop is the stillest (is that a word?) one of all. He (?) is a fairly large fellow who just doesn't move all that much. The sanctuary is really one huge cage that you can walk into and bird watch while birds fly all around you. I have stayed for a few hours watching the birds and various people and it always amazed me how many people walked right by the hammerkop and never saw him. I enjoy taking pictures here because I don't have to really worry about my camera focusing on the bars of the cage. It is such a restful place to be. |

When he finally did move, he flew down to a little pond that was virtually at my feet. I was very graciously allowed to take a nice profile shot. Now you can see why he is called a hammerkop. |
