BATTLE BANNER
The tide of war rages, and the armies of warhammer rally under the battle banner
Basis for Tactics -by Roderick Soo
Warhammer fantasy tactics like most table top games and battles in general depend on the following factors for success, not the flank charge etc..these come under manuvering, which
is an essential element but alone cannot win the
battle.

They are not necessarily in order of importance:although I think b), c) and d) very important.

a) Position : the physical placement of troops, with respect to terrain, the enemy and each other.

b) Mobility: used offensively, mobility is used to limit an opponents options, defensively to preserve yours. Different from manuver because it entails choice and therefore battle plan.

c) Tempo : the ability to make the opponent react, to increase and reduce threat at will.

d) Weight : the actual deliverance of combat power

e) Manuver : how good you are moving troops and seeimg avenues to advance, retreat, flank etc.Can be taught by rote

f) Anticipation : this is the know your enemy bit and surprise element, can be embodied in combos and how well you deal with them.

Certain players stress some more than others and certain armies are better than some elements than others. These elements exist in combination.

The best battles are those that utilise all these elements.

This is how some armies deploy and maneuver even sacrificing some units to fix the opponent's entire battle line, then crushing the opponent through a flanking sweep by a powerful cavlary element. Or how some armies like orcs and dwarfs deploy in tight formations with front units blocking those units that are behind, luring in the opponent by appearing to sacrifice mobility then beating him with weight and close in manuvering.

Even gunline armies reduce an enemy's options by limiting mobility, forcing him to rush forward and by dictating the tempo with concentrating fire and bottlenecking the enemy. One element can transpose into another.
