| Painting the Beasts | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Here is a relatively fast method of painting up beastmen. Each model will take approximately 30-45minutes and have a good effect up to "arm length" view. The colours used here are just guides. Remember that the key to "tabletop" or "arm length" quality models is contrast. This is why some people have painted models that simply catches your eye when you make a sweeping glance across the gaming table. Dark colours with white (slightly off-white) highlights work very well to give contrast. This method will work for most non-human armies (eg. O&G, Undead) so give them a try as well. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Step 1 : Base coat the model white. For this model, I have spplied this using a spray. Do all the beastmen models at once, so that you save time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Step 2 : Put on the base colour. Water down the base colour you want for the model using a ratio of 3 parts water to 1 part paint. The base colour is typically the lightest shade of colour the model will have. Eg. lightest shade of brown in this case. Apply generously with a large brush. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Step 3 : Do a wash. The wash will create the effect of different shades on the model. Select a colour that is at least 4X darker that your base colour. Usually adding black to the base colour works, but it depends on the colour in use as well. Water down the wash colour you want for the model using a ratio of 3 parts water to 1 part paint. Apply generously with a large brush. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Step 4 : Again diluting black in the ratio of 3:1 (water:paint), paint this onto the fur areas of the model. The chainmail, eye sockets and mouth are painted with this as well. Additionally, to create more contrast on the model, a 4:1 (water:black) paint is used to paint on the recesses of the model (ie. muscle definition, grooves of hooves) The belt has also been painted red at this time. |

| Step 5 : Using an off-white colour (ie. Vallejo - Dark Sand in this case), paint on the cloth areas of the model. Do not paint over the recess of the model. This will create contrast between the colours. The hooves are done by painting lines on the hooves, leaving some areas inthe wsh colour. |
