Since I brought this up this afternoon, I've had more than a few questions on it so I'm posting the answer. I'll try to be as accurate as possible. I now do this slightly differently than the way I was taught, so I'll go over both. The French Heel: improved version of the pitiful directions I gave the first time... It is easiest if stitches are divisible by three, if they aren't you could make them so by decreasing as needed in a knit row. It will only be one or two stitches. Divide sts on three needles--even if you usually use four. The first needle begins one stitch to the right of center of the top of the sock....this places the top decreases in the center of the foot. Row 1) K2tog, ssk, knit to end of needle. Do the same on each needle. Row 2) Knit one row... Repeat the above rows until there are 12 sts left and bind off as you prefer...as this is three sided, I prefer pulling the yarn through the loops to end rather than kitchenering. Your choice. Comments You may prefer to switch the K2tog and SSKs around depending on the effect you are after. If you switch them, the decreases will face each other. If you leave them as I gave them above, the decreases will face the groups of plain stitches...SSk's face left and K2tog's face right. I know the way I gave is 'backwards' from a 'usual toe' (whatever THAT is,grin.) In the original version, there are two stitches between the two decreases with gives a more 'standard' band where the decreases are. [If you choose this version, start two stitches to the right of center] Since the decreases are in the center top of the foot and in two places on the bottom of the foot, I wanted them to be less obvious and modified the instructions. Where did I learn it? a woman I met at a bus stop. English was not her first language, but we both spoke knitting. The modified version I came up with, but I dare say someone has done it before. I don't believe there is anything new in knitting. Did that make sense? If not...I will try to clarify anything muddy. I should not have been so sketchy in my original post. If anyone knows of a place where this has been published, in either form, please post it. Karen in Alaska |
