These toes are usually done in 6 sections.

So the # of total sts needs to be divisble by 6. Like 42, for example, is 6 x 7.

So, I'll (knit 5, k2tog) 6x.

Knit 2 rnds.

Then (knit 4, k2tog)6x.

Knit 2 rnds, etc until down to approx.18-24 sts (depends on the starting # of sts), then dec every rnd.

But, you can do 5 sections, if you have 30, 35, 40, 45 sts. Or 4 sections.

At 4 sections, you'll only need 1 plain rnd between each dec rnd, but, at this point, it has become the star toe, as described in Nancy Bush's Folk Socks.

Her round toe decreases at 8 points, so that is why I call mine a variant, as it decreases at 6 points.
