"God Lives Silently"
This is a poem that expresses how I view the universe and the human role within that.
We ran up the trail like children run through toy stores
excited by anything, everything, and mostly by things unseen
The path twisted and wound around so that you could see all that was available
The five of us were one another's guide
as we waded through one of the few innocent times left

Seeing trees with branches made like chairs for reading
and rocks that stood like altars,
I began to find my spirit in the complex simplicity of its order
God moved in that moment, in that day that sat still as glass,
and He resonated with the sort of truth that invades dreams

The river that rolled down the mountain was more like a stream,
and along its tide we skipped stones of history that bounced up and down,
connecting us to our childhood and to the revelations to come
Then the night accepted us like a compassionate friend
and I began to understand that all I really need is some friends, a backpack, and the now

I took stock of the toys of the earth even if there were more than the mind could fathom,
and I began to understand that God lives there silently and made it all for us
We have to choose to love Him and find Him in the quiet folds of dawn
Nature doesn't judge us as it only demands we be true to ourselves
and then we learn whether or not that is enough
