Episode 5:  Austin to Van Horn, Texas

Headed out for West Texas early morning New Years Day.  One of the first things we had seen when we crossed the Lousiana/Texas border was a sign that said "El Paso 875 miles", so we knew what was ahead of us!  The drive didn't seem as long as it was because the landscape was so pretty.  There were very few people driving because of the holiday, so we had the road to ourselves.  It was interesting to watch the landscape change as we got farther west - it got much more mountainous.
Some of the many great views we got driving in Central Texas.
It warmed up enough to bust out the shorts!  (This would all change by the next morning - hee hee.)
Jenny comtemplates getting us further west.  Missy's sun hat awaits the beach.
We decided to stop for the night in Van Horn, Texas.  Our camping options were pretty limited, so we set up in an RV park.  It was our little tent and a bunch of giant motor homes.  We had a great view of the mountains, though.  This was Missy's first camping experience, beyond camping in someone's back yard.  We got to cook on our camp stove and experience true desert weather.  Missy was wearing shorts when we arrived that night, and wanted a snowsuit by the time we woke up in the morning!  Jenny, of course, was prepared - and wore six layers of clothes to bed (okay, just three).  Missy scoffed at the time.  We all know who had the last laugh.
