Episode 12:  Los Angeles to Monterey, California
After the hectic traffic conditions we encountered in LA, we were eager to drive up the cost to Monterey.  Our plans there were to visit Missy's old college roomate Julie.  Traffic was so bad just getting out of LA and then coupled with a LONG drive on a pitch black winding road through the mountains, we did not get to Monterey untill 1 am. Julie was recovering from the flu and had been asleep but still managed to be cheerful when we arrived!  We chatted a minute and then she showed us to our most fabulous accomodations thus far on the trip!
This is know as "the little house" and it is located behind Julie's house in Monterey.  It is an old tool shed that has been converted into a little bedroom.  It is very cool and to access it, you must walk through all the plants and trees in the backyard.
After sleeping in, the next day was a lot of fun.  Julie showed us some of the highlights of Monterey(determined to make this THE BEST stop on our trip)  This included Cannery Row, a Ghirardelli shop, the downtown area, and this great store called Trader Joe's which was a health food junkies delight!(I know, what were we doing there)  Our big plan  for the day was to ride out to Big Sur and do some hiking near the ocean.  It was pretty wet that day, not really rainy but wet and drizzly so we canned the idea of hiking and just spent a lot of time pulling off to the side of the road and taking photos and enjoying the totally beautiful landscape.  The waves were pretty big and there was lots of foamy water crashing on the rocks.  It was a very pleasant way to spend the day!  Julie took us up to a restaurant that has a great view of the ocean, which because of the fog, we could not maximize, but we found some other things to amuse ourselves with!
Here is a view of Cannery Row.  This would be the place that John Steinbeck set most of his novels in.  The town pays all sorts of homage to him in the form of statues, plaques, ect.  The pink sign on the left is indeed "the Bubba-Gump shrimp Co. restaurant!  This area is really nice because it is still very much a wharf in spite of the night clubs and tourist shops!
We had the good fortune to see this giant rainbow on our walk along Cannery Row.  It was so big that people were just stopping in their tracks to stare at it.  We thought it merited a shot.
