So this is how my house is heated.. There is a gas
line that goes into the house my landlord unhooked the stove(plita in Russian)
and hooked some tubing to it.. Ran that into the living room (have a one
bedroom, but I closed off the bedroom) There is a primitive wood stove with a
whole cut in the front door of it. Now when I say wood stove I mean a metal box
with legs about 50cm by 20 by20cm then it has a smoke stack that goes out of
the window of the living room into the kitchen then outside. Attached to the
hose is a long metal tube 3cm diameter with a valve where it meets the rubber.
On it the end of the tube is shaped like a big arrow along the tip of the arrow
there are holes that let the gas come out. I light a piece of paper on fire and
drop it hopefully on top of the thick metal arrow. I turn the gas on at the
valve and I hope that the gas lights a few times it didn't and I didn't know if
I am supposed to turn the gas off or wait.. Well you don't wait!!! The stove
filled up with gas (really quick, I swear!!) and then ignited one the embers of
the paper. The result was not cute. The stove shot flames out of the top cover
where you can cook on and out the whole were the tube goes in. It is kind of
dangerous but one of the Drivers from Peace Corps came in and said with a big
smile and giving me a bout 10 kisses "Maladetz, Apres, Maladetz, Helok trha es"
which means Well done (Russian), well done (Armenian), well done (Russian), you
are a wise man!! (Armenian) I tell this story not to get people worried about
me the dogs are enough but the fact that some of the things that I cant
remember are different have just come to be part of my every day life. America
is so safe I feel like I will come back able to deal with any thing that may
have seemed in any way dangerous back home, able to leap tall buildings in a
single bound. |
