Links Official website lots of pics Why Candy Lo? Candy lo is another one of my favorite chinese artists lately. I discovered one of her songs called "Rubbish", and loved it. She writes most of her own music and although her singing is not necessarily one of her strengths, her music is what showcases her talent. I think she is so cool - her look, and the confident image she projects. She graduated from fashion school, and has also done some acting. One notable movie she did was "Time and Tide" with another famous actor/singer, Nicholas Tse and well-known director Tsui Hark. It was a pretty slick movie, lots of action. Interview Rising star Candy Lo Hau-yam was the lead singer of the five-member group "Black & Blue" between 1994 and 1996 before going solo. Candy officially started her solo career after she signed a contract with Sony Music in early 1998. Her first album, "It's Unnecessary ... Perfect But Fearful'', was released 1998 and the song Rubbish enabled her to be drawn much attention. With her unique style and charisma, she won the Best Newcomer Award at Commercial Radio's Ultimate Song Charts Award Presentation Ceremony 1998. The all-round talent seems to reach high note after going solo, she adds that she learned a lot from working in studio together with the veteran musicians and producers. How and when did you start your showbiz career? I was the lead singer of Black & Blue between 1994 and 1996. After I left the band, I was given a chance to sign a contract with Sony Music in early 1998 to be a solo singer. Initially, after going solo I had to bear the pressure on my own. I wondered how to deal with pressure from the changes in my life that time, so I usually hid me away and cried alone because I didn't want to tell my family to make them anxious. Those day were harsh, because my experience on human nature/relationship was little, but nowadays, I must consult my family and pals to seek help when I encounter problems. What was your childhood ambition? I wanted to be a painter when I was a child, then I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was a secondary student. I had never thought of being a singer even though I often pretended I was singing on stage at home when I was a kid. I remember that my parents must give me applause whatever I sang well or not. How many hours a week do you spend singing? I don't count how many hours I spend singing a week, but I think I spend at least four to five hours a day on singing and practising guitar. Sometimes I am a lazy girl. I like to spend time on watching TV, especially Cable TV's Discovery Channel which really broadens my horizon around the world. What is your ambition? Of course, I would love to hold my solo concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum in the not-too-distant-future, but I don't think I can do that in a short term because I have not enough new hits. In fact, I am not a very ambitious person. I just want to try more composing and even doing more some other music stuff in studio. It is great for me to have a chance to join hands with the crew of my company and some veteran musicians to make my latest album ``Emission of Colour'' in which I totally composed 6 songs. Gaining some valuable remarks and praises from others really strengthens my confidence to try more composing and song writing in the future. Anyway, I would still be working hard and leading a colourful life to enrich myself. How would you describe your life as a Canto-pop singer? Honestly, I don't like promotions, but I understand that it is necessary in such a competitive world if I want to keep my profile high, otherwise I will soon be fade out. Anyway, I have adapted and I deeply know it is just a rule of the game. Now, I learn as I grow up every day. I undertand that if I overcome a challenge, I will be a step closer to achieving my ambition. Can you tell me if you have once fallen in love with Nicholas Tse Ting-fung? (She sighs!) I have been asked such question thousands of times. I was annoyed since the rumour arose in May last year after Nicholas Tse sent me a bunch of flowers on stage at a concert. It is very very ridiculous. For me, sending me flowers really didn't mean anything. I didn't know why people would think we were falling in love. To be honest, I dislike someone to mention it again, because I don't want people would misunderstand me that I attempt to promote myself by the idle news. We are just good friends, we love singing, music and composing. Now, it is known that he is dating with the diva Faye Wong. I am really happy for him to have found his true love. I wholeheartedly bless them both. What has been your biggest achievement so far? I was excited to be given a rare opportunity of making my latest album ``Emission of Colour'' with other experienced musicians and engineers. I really have learned a lot from them, not only about the process of making an album, but also the conscientious attitude towards work. Hence, working in the studio is my greatest pleasure and advantage. And also, after getting involved in making the album, I was given more confidence and courage to challenge something I never try. If you had an option in career, would you still want to be a singer? If I had an option to pick in my career, I would prefer to do something related to music, like working in a studio or making records. I am sure they really give me the greatest pleasure. I also deeply believe that I am destined to ``music''. What was the most unforgettable event in your career? The last show with the band "Black & Blue". I remember the show was held at the Fringe Club in Central on September 26, 1996. After that, I signed with Sony Music to be a solo singer. Therefore, that was a show I will never forget because the dates spent with those four guys were unforgettable. Have you imagined when would you like to get married? Yes, I have. I would like to get married before I am 30. I think I will give up singing after getting married. I may learn how to be a producer because I am sure I will still work with music after marriage. Of course, I may have to learn how to be a good mother because I love babies so much. What is your advice to Hong Kong's youths? Nowadays, adolescents seem to be lacking in human and moral values. They are vulnerable, and can't cope with failure. Remember, suicide solves nothing. Never recoil when you face difficulties, and you should heed the advice of your parents. Sometimes, I hear adolescents being disrespectful to their parents. They regard advice from parents or the elderly as annoyance or even nonsense. Remember, this is their way to show you their love and concern. Youths should be energetic and postively participate in different kinds of social activities to enrich their lives. Gallery
