Introduction to Speed and Velocity

Objective:

    Students will be able to be able to write a research report about important ideas and issues, that shows their understanding of speed and velocity, and demonstrates their ability to use modern technology.

Indiana Science Standards addressed:

5.1.2 Begin to evaluate the valdity of claims based on the amount and quality of the evidence cited.

Materials:

Estimated Time:

    This activity will take at least an hour depending on a students working ability.

Procedure:

  1. Tell students that you will beginning a new four week unit on speed and velocity.

  2. Read one of the chosen books aloud to the class.

  3. Then tell them that you will put out some other books that are based on the topics of speed and velocity.

  4. Show them what a concept map is and have the students formulate a concept map based on the topic of speed and velocity, based on the books that are presented to them.

  5. Tell them that if they need to they may work with one partner to get a better understanding of the topic.

  6. Tell them that later on in the day they will be going to the computer lab to type up a one page paper using the ideas on their concept map.

  7. This will be graded on content and correct grammar and punctuation.

Rationale:

    This activity will allow students to begin to develop their own understanding of speed and velocity, and will help with partner learning. The writing of the paper is to increase the retention of  the student's knowledge of speed and velocity.
