Smith Rock State Park Photo Gallery
This is Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon just north of Redmond.
This area used to be a pile of volcanic ash and rhyolite lava, but millions of years ago, the Crooked River cut through it to create this canyon. The cliffs rise about 400 feet above the river.
If you follow the trail into the canyon in the above picture, you get this view on the way back.
Smith Rock State Park is world famous for rock climbing; it has more than 280 established climing routes. There are also plenty of hiking trails and one of them goes up this rock. I love the clouds in this photo!
This is Monkey Face it has the most difficult climb in the park, and one of the most difficult in the country. That white and blue figure in the center of the photo is a person. I am not sure which if he is on the most difficult route.
This is the east end of the canyon which is for hiking and bird watching. I don't think there are any climbing routes over there.
